Magic Johnson congratulates “championship-caliber coach” Ime Udoka
Former Celtics head coach Ime Udoka has agreed to a deal to become the next Rockets coach. Houston and Udoka moved fairly quickly toward each other after the initial meeting. Udoka and GM Rafael Stone kept talking on the job.
Both sides had some strong options in the marketplace but a deal got done in the last 24 hours to land Udoka with the Rockets. Young talent, cap space, and a 14 percent chance at the No. 1 overall pick were part of a strong case to lure Udoka.
In the wake of the news of Udoka’s appointment, Magic Johnson tweeted the following: “I reached out to Ime Udoka to say congratulations on accepting the Rockets head coaching job! Houston is getting a championship-caliber coach.”
Magic Johnson’s words of congratulations come as no surprise given Udoka’s impressive coaching record. While he may not have coached during the 2022-2023 NBA season, Udoka’s success with the Boston Celtics in his first year as head coach was undeniable.
Udoka took the Celtics from a struggling 18-21 record to an impressive 51-31 record, securing them the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Under Udoka’s leadership, the Celtics went on to win the Eastern Conference title, and even made their first NBA Finals appearance since 2010.
Udoka’s success with the Celtics no doubt caught the attention of the Rockets, who are looking to rebuild and contend in the highly competitive Western Conference. With young talent and cap space at their disposal, Udoka’s appointment as head coach is a strong step in the right direction for the Rockets.
