Liz Cambage and the Sparks Agree to ‘Contract Divorce’
Liz Cambage’s playing days with the Los Angeles Sparks are over after the two parties agreed to a “contract divorce” on Tuesday. Khristina Williams of Girls Talk Sports TV and Mike Robinson of The Ball Out reported that Cambage intended to leave the organization on Tuesday before the Sparks confirmed the transaction.

Cambage signed with Sparks in February after two seasons with the Sparks. When the four-time All-Star first signed with LA, she told the LA Times that “it was L.A or out for me. There was nowhere else I wanted to be.”
The decision to leave less than one year into her tenure with the Sparks is a shocker after Cambage told the LA Times she wanted to play for the Sparks for 11 years and admired Lakers legends like Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. Through 25 games in LA, Cambage averaged 13.0 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game.
“It is with support that we share Liz Cambage’s decision to terminate her contract with the organization,” Sparks managing partner Eric Holoman said in a statement. “We want what’s best for Liz and have agreed to part ways amicably. The Sparks remain excited about our core group and are focused on our run towards a 2022 playoff berth.”

The Sparks sit at 12-15 entering play Tuesday, tied with the Dallas Wings for the sixth seed in the playoff race. They are 7-8 since Derek Fisher was dismissed as the franchise’s head coach and general manager. The Sparks’ next opponent will be the Phoenix Mercury.
