Team news

Switzerland and Italy have named their starting line-ups for the first round of 16 match at Uefa Euro 2024 as the holders continue their campaign against dangerous opponents.

The Nati are without right-back Silvan Widmer through suspension, while Remo Freuler, Dan Ndoye, Ricardo Rodriguez, Vincent Sierro and Granit Xhaka are a booking away from bans.

Switzerland XI: Sommer, Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez, Aebischer, Freuler, Xhaka, Rieder, Vargas, Embolo, Ndoye.

Defender Riccardo Calafiori is suspended for Italy and Federico Dimarco is only fit for the bench after suffering an injury, while Alessandro Bastoni starts after recovering from flu symptoms.

Nicolo Fagioli starts in midfield for the first time and Stephan El Shaarawy joins Federico Chiesa and Gianluca Scamacca in attack.

Italy XI: Donnarumma, Di Lorenzo, Mancini, Bastoni, Darmian, Cristante, Fagioli, Barella, Chiesa, Scamacca, El Shaarawy.

The state of play

Switzerland’s commanding 3-1 win over Hungary in their opening match ultimately sealed their place in the round of 16.

Xherdan Shaqiri showed his enduring class with a stunning long-range strike in their 1-1 draw with Scotland, and they would have been surprise Group A winners but for a 92nd-minute Germany equaliser in their third game.

Italy went through in second place in Group B in last-gasp fashion, Mattia Zaccagni scoring a 98th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Croatia.

The Azzurri’s finest performance so far was a 2-1 opening win over Albania when they recovered from falling behind to the fastest goal in Euro history, and they lost 1-0 to a Spain side who had a perfect group stage.

The winners of this round of 16 match will play England or Slovakia in the quarter-finals in Dusseldorf on July 6.
