LeBron ‘proud’ of Bronny’s commitment to college, USC: ‘Very humbling and great moment for our family’
More than their Game 3 dominance against the Golden State Warriors, LeBron James already salivated the entire Saturday from just the fact that his son, Bronny, officially selected that next basketball stop of his promising career.
Right at the postgame of the Lakers’ 127-97 avalanche win over the Warriors, James spoke highly about his son’s decision of going to college by picking the basketball program of University of Southern California (USC).
James, who entered the NBA in 2003 straight out of high school as a phenom from St. Vincent-St. Mary, is delighted that Bronny will be the first one to accept a tertiary education within his family.
“His next journey of picking a great university in USC, I’m proud of him,” said James after dropping 21 points on their victory against Golden State. “This is an incredible thing. … Unless it was like one of my great grandmothers and great grandfathers or someone that was way before my time – to my knowledge this is the first one out of the James gang to go to college.
“Obviously his dad didn’t go to school, his mom didn’t go to college. I think my mom went stepped on, maybe stepped on campus for a little bit, maybe a community college or something but she had my little a– running around so she couldn’t spend much time in the classroom. 19 years old she couldn’t do that, and I was three.”
After months of a highly publicized recruitment, Bronny officially announced his commitment of becoming a brand new Trojan via Instagram on weekend. After drawing interest from the likes of Ohio State and Oregon, the young standout ultimately sticked himself much closer to home and his all-time great father.
A six-foot-three guard from Sierra Canyon, Bronny is the No. 21 overall player and No. 5 combo guard in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the class of 2023. He will head to an Andy Enfield-mentored USC team that had a first-round finish in last season’s NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Torunament.
“It’s a very, very, very, very exciting, very humbling and great moment for our family,” James said of Bronny, who was also in attendance of the Warriors-Lakers Game 3 battle. “He’s just super cool, a great kid. USC is getting a great kid.
“I would say he’s there to play basketball, but they’re going to be a super surprised how great of a kid he is even though they’ve been recruiting for quite a while.”
