LeBron James reacts to his friend betting on NBA games through illegal bookie
LeBron James’ friend and business partner, Maverick Carter, has admitted to participating in illegal betting on NBA games through an unauthorized bookmaker, according to federal law enforcement documents.
Carter’s acknowledgment came during a November 2021 interview with federal agents, part of their investigation into bookie Wayne Nix, who has since pleaded guilty to charges related to an offshore sports-betting operation.
In 2021, before sports betting was legalized in 38 states and the District of Columbia, Carter was interviewed once by federal law enforcement in connection to the Wayne Nix investigation, clarified spokesperson Adam Mendelsohn.
Mendelsohn stressed that Carter cooperated fully, faced no charges, and was not the primary focus of the investigation. Carter, as a business manager, is not prohibited from betting on NBA games.
James addressed the situation, stating, “Maverick’s his own man, and at the end of the day, gambling is legal,” as reported by Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
