Keane accuses England of ‘arrogance’ after seeing off Ireland

Roy Keane was unimpressed by England’s second-half display despite their 2-0 win against the Republic of Ireland this afternoon.

The former Ireland midfielder watched as goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish put the Three Lions in complete control at half-time but they failed to build on their superiority in the second period.

Keane felt Lee Carsley’s men had eased off and even accused them of arrogance.

He told ITV Sport: “Ireland were there for the taking. England were dominant in the first half and we praised their decision-making, quality and movement.

“But I thought they were awful in the second half – they played within themselves, took too many touches, tried playing ‘Roy of the Rovers’ passes. Keep doing the basics and suck Ireland out.

“As good as England were in the first half, I thought they were as bad in the second. Even the subs, players strolling off, showing a bit of arrogance.”

Keane’s fellow pundit, former England striker Ian Wright, was equally disappointed by the second-half showing.

He said: “The second half, the performance felt to me like England took their foot off the gas a bit.

“The way we started, the way we played, I thought we should have pressed it home a little bit more.

“I thought we would have played with the same intensity, see if we could get three or four, be more ruthless.”
