‘Joker: Folie á Deux’ Comes to Digital, But When Will ‘Joker 2’ Be Streaming on Max?
Joker: Folie á Deux is coming to digital, just three-and-a-half weeks after the movie opened in theaters. No doubt no one at Warner Bros. is laughing.
Joker: Folie à Deux was directed by Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. Joaquin Phoenix reprised his role as Arthur Fleck, aka The Joker, who is this time joined by the psychiatric patient Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga. After months and months of hype, this sequel to the hugely successful 2019 Joker movie was a disappointment for WB. After the film was panned by critics at its Venice Film Festival premiere, it went on to earn $201 million at the worldwide box office. That may sound like a lot of money, but, in fact, the film just barely earned back its reported $190 million production budget.
Perhaps that’s why WB opted to push the movie to digital after just three-and-a-half weeks in theaters—much sooner than Dune 2 or Godzilla X Kong, both of which got six weeks in theaters before going to digital. Maybe this “premium” video-on-demand release—which is the industry term for charging movie theater prices for an earlier release on digital platforms—will earn the studio a few more bucks.
But even though Joker 2 will soon be available to watch at home, but you’ll have to pay a pretty penny to watch it—more, even, than you might pay to watch the movie in theaters. Why pay so much, when Joker: Folie á Deux will be streaming on Max soon enough, free to anyone with a subscription? Here’s what you should know about how to watch Joker 2 online, and when to expect to see Joker 2 streaming on Max.
Where to watch Joker 2 online:
Joker: Folie á Deux will be released on digital platforms tomorrow, on Tuesday, October 29, at 12 a.m. Eastern Time. Beginning tomorrow, you’ll be able to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie will cost $24.99 to buy, and $19.99 to rent. If you rent the movie, you’ll have 48 hours to view after hitting “play.”
Joker: Folie À Deux will be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on December 17. The premium digital and physical releases of the movie will come with the following special features: “Everything Must Go (4 Part Longform Documentary),” “The Character Of Music,” “Live! With The Joker,” “Colors Of Madness,” and “Crafted With Class.”
Joker 2 is not yet available on a subscription-based streaming service, but we do expect to see Joker 2 streaming on Max eventually, because that is the streamer owned by Warner Bros.
When will Joker: Folie A Deux be streaming on Max?
The Joker 2 Max release date has not yet been announced yet, but we can make an educated guess based on previous releases. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released on PVOD four weeks after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Max on August 16, about three months after it was released in theaters. If Joker: Folie à Deux—which was released on digital about three-and-a-half weeks after releasing in theaters—follows a similar release pattern, you may see Joker 2 streaming on Max around January 2024, aka about three months after the film opened in theaters.
That said, the Max release date for WB films has varied by title. Another recent WB release, Trap, began streaming on Max a little under three months after the film opened in theaters—so it’s possible you could see Joker 2 on Max before the end of the year. This is all speculation. If you want to watch the new Joker movie right away, you can buy or rent the movie online.
