Jets name Aaron Rodgers, three others as their captains

The Jets elected their 2024 captains Tuesday, choosing three of the same players who held the title a year ago along with a new veteran.

Aaron Rodgers and C.J. Mosley, two of the team’s 2023 captains, were unsurprisingly reelected for 2024.

They will be joined by Quinnen Williams and Thomas Morstead, giving the team four captains — one more than they had last season, when Justin Hardee was the captain from the special teams unit.

Williams was not initially elected last season, but took Rodgers’ spot after he went down with a torn Achilles.

Rodgers and Mosley are both experienced in the role.

In addition to last season, Rodgers was a Packers captain 12 times.

Mosley has now been a five-time captain with the Jets — every season he’s been in New York save for 2020, when he opted out due to concerns over the pandemic.

Nearly every team that elects captains elevates its quarterback, and it is no secret that the Jets are depending on Rodgers to elevate nearly every facet of their team.

“You cherish a guy like that,” offensive tackle Morgan Moses said. “When we have conversations all the time on the sideline about structure of the offense, structure of plays. When you have those conversations, he allows you to see from his eye’s view. And so when you have that, it raises the group’s IQ cause we come in all on one cord.”

Morstead, who enters his 16th season in the league and third with the Jets (2021, 2023), was a captain with the Saints in 2014 and ’15.

After ending his holdout Tuesday morning, Niners offensive tackle Trent Williams worked off to the side during the portion of practice open to media, according to reports.

Christian McCaffrey practiced for the first time since straining his calf early last month, as did Brandon Aiyuk, who had also held out of camp.

There appeared to be no movement on Haason Reddick’s holdout going into game week, with coach Robert Saleh saying there were no new development that he knew of and that he had not talked to Reddick since before training camp.

The Jets had a light practice Tuesday, which Saleh referred to as a “bonus Monday.” They will be off Wednesday before holding a full practice Thursday.

After veteran tackle Tyron Smith regularly received rest days during training camp, Saleh declined to say he would be limited in practice this week, but said the Jets would “continue to be smart” with his workload.
