Jasmine Thomas Out For the Rest of Season Due to Torn ACL

The Connecticut Sun announced on Tuesday that Jasmine Thomas would miss the 2022 Season due to a torn ACL she suffered on Sunday against the Indiana Fever.

Thomas, the captain of the Sun, will have reconstructive surgery on her knee. The team didn’t provide a timetable for the surgery or rehabilitation, per Connecticut.

“Of course, I’m sad that I won’t be able to continue playing on the court with this special team,” Thomas said in a release. “Everyone has been supportive and uplifting, and I’m just preparing mentally and emotionally to attack my recovery. I will continue to be a vocal leader and support my team from the sidelines. They’re incredible, and I’m excited about what they’re going to achieve.”

Thomas has played with the Sun for eight seasons, leading Connecticut to their first conference title since 2005 in 2019, ultimately losing to the Washington Mystics in the 2019 WNBA Finals. She led the Sun in assists last season and has played 222 games, placing her at fifth in all-time franchise history.

Thomas is in her eighth season with the Suns and helped guide the team to the conference title in 2019, Connecticut’s first since 2005. She ranks fifth in all-time franchise history with 222 games played. Thomas earned her first All-Star big in 2017. She has been named to five All-Defensive teams, most recently earning a second-team selection in 2021. Thomas has averaged 9.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals per game for her career.

Up until this point, Thomas has only missed seven games since getting drafted 12th overall in the 2011 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. She started her career with the Mystics before being traded to Atlanta Dream and then the Sun in 2015. Thomas averaged 6.6 points, 2.2 boards, and 3.7 dimes per season in 21.8 minutes per game through five games.

“Saddened and disappointed for Jas,” Coach and general manager Curt Miller said. “She has been the epitome of an ironwoman throughout her career.”
