How the final day unfolded away from title race

The Premier League served up plenty of entertaining matches away from the title race on the final day of the 2023-24 season.

While Manchester City beat West Ham to pip Arsenal to the crown, eight other games were going on across England’s top flight.

Liverpool 2-0 Wolves

Jurgen Klopp received the perfect send-off at Anfield as Liverpool beat Wolves comfortably.

Goals from Jarell Quansah and Alexis Mac Allister the first half quashed any chance of an upset and Nelson Semedo was sent off to make things even easier for the Reds.

They may not have gone the distance in the title race, but Klopp is leaving the Merseyside club in good hands for incoming head coach Arne Slot.

Sheffield United 0-3 Tottenham

Tottenham secured fifth and a place in next season’s Europa League with a dominant victory at Sheffield United.

It capped off an improved campaign under Ange Postecoglou and the goals were shared around at Bramall Lane with Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro getting on the scoresheet.

The Blades were finally put out of their misery in the top flight. They finished on 16 points and won just three games.

Luton Town 2-4 Fulham

Luton will never forget their first season in the Premier League, even if they are heading straight back down.

A home loss to Fulham was not short of entertainment but the Cottagers proved to have too much quality for Rob Edwards and the Hatters.

Fulham finished 21 points above today’s opponents and will look to improve upon a decent campaign in 2024-25.

Brighton 0-2 Manchester United

Roberto De Zerbi’s shock departure may have had an impact on Brighton’s final-day performance as they lost to an injury-hit Manchester United.

The Seagulls blanked in front of goal but it was a different story for the Red Devils, who got on the scoresheet through Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund.

Results elsewhere mean that United will have to beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final if they are to play in Europe next term.

Brentford 2-4 Newcastle

Newcastle have done their part and as it stands occupy the final European place.

They sit seventh thanks to their win over Brentford and four different goalscorers helped cancel out strikes from Vitaly Janelt and Yoane Wissa for the Bees.

Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes were credited and it was another classic to end the campaign.

Crystal Palace 5-0 Aston Villa

Crystal Palace made it four wins in their last five to end the season under Oliver Glasner by thrashing Aston Villa.

Unai Emery’s men must still have been in party mode having qualified for the Champions League earlier in the week because they were not at the races.

A hat-trick from Jean-Phillippe Mateta and an Eberechi Eze brace ensured the Eagles finish in the top half.

Burnley 1-2 Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest were likely safe without needing to win at Burnley in the last match but they did it anyway.

The Tricky Trees will be part of the top flight cohort again next season despite being given a points deduction earlier in the campaign.

A Chris Wood brace was enough to see off the relegated Clarets who got one back through Josh Cullen in a small showing of resilience in what has been a difficult season for Vincent Kompany and Co.

Chelsea 2-1 Bournemouth

Chelsea also won on the last day to finish sixth.

A goal from the halfway line from Moises Caicedo and a second-half Raheem Sterling strike put the Blues in control at Stamford Bridge before Beniot Badiashile scored an own goal to bring things back into play.

In the end, Mauricio Pochettino’s men stood firm and will join Spurs in the Europa League next season unless Manchester United win the FA Cup.
