How NBC adjusted its philosophy for 2024 Olympics coverage

They’ll do it live.

For the 2024 Olympics in Paris, NBC will air the premier events, including swimming, gymnastics and track and field, live across the United States simulcast on their broadcast network and Peacock streaming service.

On weekdays, this window will be from noon until 6 p.m., and it will be 8 a.m. through 6 p.m. on weekends.

This represents a change from the last time the Olympics were in Europe, in London in 2012, when viewers had to watch marquee competitions — such as Michael Phelps vs. Ryan Lochte and Gabby Douglas winning gold medals in gymnastics — on tape delay.

The internet made spoilers of the results unavoidable, and NBC has adjusted this time around.

“We changed our philosophy,” Molly Solomon, NBC’s executive producer and president of Olympics production, told The Post in a phone interview.

“When you look at the strength of the time zone, live sports definitely has a hook in America. Why not air them live in the afternoon and give people the opportunity to watch them when they want to? We really want to galvanize this country around the Paris Olympics.”

It’s been eight years since there was a Summer Olympics with fans in the stands, as the 2020 Games in Tokyo, which actually took place in 2021, were held in empty venues due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In lieu of tape-delayed sports, NBC will air “Primetime in Paris” hosted by Mike Tirico, a program with news, highlights and feature stories that go beyond the results of the competitions.

“You can sit down for three hours and experience in-depth storytelling and really watch the best finishes of the day,” Solomon said.

“We are going to burst out of the gate with gold medals. We’ve got three hours, and we’re going to make decisions about what is the most compelling content out there. But also we get the chance that we don’t get when we’re live to do in-depth storytelling with up-close-and-personal profiles and advance the story into a rich presentation in prime time.”

Rapper Snoop Dogg will be a regular contributor to the prime time program.

Tirico also is the host of Friday night’s Opening Ceremony, with pop superstar Kelly Clarkson and Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning among the other broadcasters.

On Peacock, which is simulcasting every event that airs on NBC as well as cable channels such as USA Network, there will also be a “Gold Zone” show — mimicking “NFL Red Zone” — with hosts including Scott Hanson and Andrew Siciliano showing nonstop live highlights from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

There will also be a “companion cast” on Peacock, “Watch With Alex Cooper,” hosted by the popular “Call Her Daddy” podcaster.

“We think she’s the perfect host. She has a very passionate fan base among young women,” Solomon said.

“We thought it would be a really fun experiment for her to bring in some of her pals, regular podcast guests and NBC Olympics broadcasters to watch the games with her.”

The streaming service additionally will air a playful highlights show hosted by comedians Kenan Thompson and Kevin Hart.
