How LeBron James and Rajon Rondo outcoached their way to the 2020 NBA title
When Rajon Rondo and LeBron James joined forces in the bubble during the 2020 NBA Finals, they brought a unique mindset to the Lakers’ championship pursuit.
While awaiting their Finals opponent, whether it would be the Celtics or the Heat, their focus wasn’t solely on outplaying their future rivals on the court. Instead, they aimed to outcoach their opponents’ staff.
Rondo recently reminisced about that unconventional approach on The Old Man & The Three podcast. He shared how he and James were watching a game, possibly between the Miami and Boston, during the lead-up to the Finals. The game went down to the wire, and that’s when LeBron turned to Rondo with a plan.
“If we get Miami, I got Spo, and if we get Boston, you got Brad [Stevens],” LeBron told Rondo.
Their mindset was clear: it wasn’t just about beating the Heat or the Celtics; it was about outcoaching or outplaying the opposing coaching staff.
Both James and Rondo had a deep understanding of their respective coaches, Erik Spoelstra and Brad Stevens, and believed that this unique strategy would lead them to victory. In the end, the Lakers would go on to win the 2020 NBA Championship.
