How do Giants fare entering Week 14?
The New York Giants were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Thanksgiving Day after falling to the Dallas Cowboys, 27-20.
With the defeat, the Giants secured double-digit losses for the ninth time in 11 seasons and thrust the regime of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll back under the spotlight. With quarterback Daniel Jones no longer around to blame, things are getting tense in East Rutherford.
This coming Sunday, Big Blue will host the New Orleans Saints and look to pick up their first home victory of the entire season.
As we enter Week 14, here’s a look at where the Giants place in a multitude of power rankings.
Think it’s gotten ugly here? A team that’s allowed at least 120 rushing yards in seven consecutive games just put Pro Bowl DL Dexter Lawrence (dislocated elbow) onto injured reserve. Imagine what that means for Baltimore RB Derrick Henry’s owners when the fantasy playoffs begin in two weeks.
Drew Lock appears to be more of an answer than Tommy DeVito. If the Giants can keep Lock upright, they at least some semblance of an offense.
The veteran linebacker (Bobby Okereke) probably should have made the Pro Bowl last year, when he had even better production. In a new defense, he doesn’t have quite the same opportunities for big plays, but Okereke is still producing. He does it all. The middle ‘backer has 93 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 3 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. As coach Brian Daboll said on Thanksgiving, Okereke is one of the best in the league at punching the ball out. It’s a skill. Only two NFC linebackers (Zack Baun and Fred Warner) have more forced fumbles this season.
Vinnie Iyer, The Sporting News:
The Giants dug deeper at quarterback with the same low-upside, high-mistake results when Drew Lock needed to start for lame-duck coach Brian Daboll.
The Giants’ best player this season, by far, has been defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II. He’s out for the rest of the season with a dislocated elbow. As if the Giants needed any more bad news.
With quarterback Tommy Devito inactive against Dallas, we got a chance to watch the Drew Lock show — and it never disappoints. Lock’s long scramble reminded us of how his athletic traits make him interesting as a backup option … and then when he threw a screen so poorly it got tipped and intercepted, it reminded us of why he can never be more than that. Force-feeding the run game and rookie receiver Malik Nabers isn’t generating much offense anymore, and the team’s lack of discipline was evident in its penalties against Dallas.
This group is just as good at beating itself as it is at losing to superior opponents, and there are plenty of those left on their schedule.
With the Giants at 2-5 back in October, owner John Mara gave head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen a vote of confidence. As we sit here today, the G-Men are 2-10, bringing their losing streak to seven games. The problem with cutting Daniel Jones is now that one more reasonable excuse has been shown the door. So, just how busy will this offseason be for Big Blue? That could depend on how this team plays out the string of a lost season. Winning at least one of the last three home games would be nice, considering New York currently holds an 0-6 record at MetLife Stadium this season. Drew Lock was clobbered on Thanksgiving but actually played pretty gamely and gave the Giants something of a chance. Maybe they can pull an upset down the stretch.
Ben Rolfe, Pro Football Network:
The New York Giants very much feel like they are in a downward spiral. Drew Lock did some nice things in his first start of the season, but his performance was ultimately not that much better than we have seen from Tommy DeVito or Daniel Jones. The defense has also faded in the last couple of weeks, and this is another team where the wheels are coming off. A potential season-ending injury to Dexter Lawrence only adds to the collective despair in East Rutherford.
