How Brazilian Gymnast Flavia Saraiva Bounced Back After Eye Injury

Flavia Saraiva bounced back in the blink of an eye.

After the gymnast from Brazil’s Olympic team took a spill during her warmup in the team all-around final July 30, she bounced back to help bring her teammates—including Rebeca Andrade, Jade Barbosa, Lorrane Oliveira and Julia Soares—earn a bronze medal.

And when it came to the all-around individual final, Flavia once again delivered.

Though the 24-year-old did not make it to the medal podium—that honor went to Team USA’s Simone Biles and Suni Lee for gold and bronze, respectively, while her teammate Rebeca earned silver—Flavia still turned impressive scores in her four events, earning her ninth place

Despite a small fall in her floor routine, Flavia earned a 12.233 in that event, a 13.900 on the uneven bars, a 13.633 in her vault and her highest score of the final, a 14.266 on the beam—bringing her total to 54.032.

But while her performance didn’t clinch her one of the top spots, Flavia accomplished what she set out to do at this year’s Games: enjoy them.
