New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen traveled down to Orlando, Florida on Saturday to watch Miami Hurricane quarterback Cam Ward in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Schoen was joined by director of player personnel Tim McDonnell, who is the nephew of co-owner John Mara.

What they witnessed was a clinic. Ward completed 12 of his 19 attempts for 190 yards and three touchdowns before being removed from the game.

Late in the first quarter, Ward threw his 156th collegiate passing touchdown, giving him the all-time Division I record.

Miami had the lead at halftime but without Ward under center, was unable to hang on, ultimately falling to Iowa State, 42-41.

Ward, a Heisman Trophy finalist, is projected to be a top-5 pick in the 2025 NFL draft and may ultimately go No. 1 overall. His primary competition is Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter.

“I just know if (the Giants) get a chance to get me, they’re going to get everything I have,” Ward told reporters at the Heisman presentation. “They’d be getting that dude. They’d be getting somebody who’s someone who doesn’t care about anything — just how he moves, how he operates on and off the field, is confident, somebody who’s going to challenge himself more than he challenges the team. At the end of the day, wins mean everything. You’re getting a winner.”

It’s speculated that Schoen and McDonnell also traveled to scout the aforementioned Sanders on Sunday.

Sanders didn’t shine nearly as much as Ward, completing 16 of his 23 pass attempts for 208 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Colorado was dominated by BYU, 36-14, and scored their final touchdown in garbage time.
