Giants’ Dexter Lawrence loves the praise from Patriots’ Bill Belichick
Dexter Lawrence has been a model of consistency for the New York Giants over the past two seasons. He had a breakout campaign in 2022 and caught the attention from across the league as one of the league’s best at his position, ultimately landing a lucrative new deal from the Giants.
Lawrence, whose status is in doubt for Sunday as he deals with an injury, was singled out as a game wrecker earlier this week by opposing head coach Bill Belichick.
Lawrence was a fan of the compliment from the future Hall of Fame head coach.
“Oh, yeah. That’s my goal every week, wreck the game,” Lawrence told reporters. “That’s done by being disruptive, causing quarterbacks to panic, think about would you want to run the ball, things like that. So yeah, I love that compliment.”
Lawrence led the Giants with 7.5 sacks last year and has 4.0 sacks through 11 games this season. His presence is felt far beyond sacks or anything the stat sheet can show, which is something Lawrence acknowledged on Friday.
“I mean, and it causes turnovers, you know? That’s the biggest thing. I’m not going to always get the sack, we’re not going to always get the sack, but if we can create a turnover by affecting the quarterback, that’s a positive, too,” he said.
As hard as it is to imagine, Lawrence might actually be playing on a higher level than he did during the 2022 season when he was named to the Pro Bowl and was elected the Second Team All-Pro.
Lawrence is the Giants’ best defensive player and continues to disrupt opposing quarterback week in and week out. The compliment from Belichick is certainly an honor given the reputation of the Patriots’ head coach around the league.
