Former New York Giants staffer Jon Berger the NFL’s new VP of replay

Jon Berger worked for the New York Giants for over 40 years in their analytics department in various roles. By the time he and the team parted ways in 2021 — amicably, by all accounts — he was their senior director of football information.

Berger went on to work for the NFL in their analytics department and is now their vice president of replay operations, although the league has never made a formal announcement of his promotion to the position.

The vacancy was reportedly filled last summer after Russell York left to work for the Big 10 Conference. Berger is now listed on the league’s website according to FootballZebras.com:

With or without the league’s confirmation, the new head of the replay operation is Jon Berger, a longtime operations employee with the New York Giants who was recently hired by the officiating department in an administrative capacity. At some point after the league declined to comment to us, the staff page of the Football Operations website was updated to include Berger’s name. Again, there was no announcement, as they had done when Yurk was hired to the position.

We have also confirmed that Berger has authority to make replay review decisions, along with senior vice president of officiating Walt Anderson and senior vice president of officiating administration Perry Fewell. The replay section of the Football Operations site was recently updated as well. It mentions his name once as a replay decision maker, but then includes the background information of his predecessor.

A LinkedIn page belonging to Berger also lists him in the role dating back to August 2023.

Berger began working for the Giants as an intern out of Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan in 1981 becoming full-time in 1986. He was the Giants’ analytics guy way before the sports industry began using the term.

When Berger began, the department was called “football information.”
