Emily Ratajkowski on Her Sexuality, Wanting to Date Women, and Dating Apps
Emily Ratajkowski has been vocal about her dating experiences ever since she became single last summer. In an interview for HommeGirls conducted over Instagram DM in March (notably, when Ratajkowski was in Tokyo and filmed kissing Harry Styles), the model discussed her sexuality and single girl era with the magazine’s creative director Jen Brill.
She told Brill that she would “love” to date the right woman, opening up more about what she looks for in a partner after publicly coming out as bisexual in her Harper’s Bazaar interview published in November.
Excerpts of Brill and Ratajkowski’s conversation and photos from the model’s stunning HommeGirls editorial, shot by Grace Ahlbom, are exclusively premiering on ELLE.com below.
In the Instagram DM chat, Brill asked Ratajkowski, “Would you ever date a woman?”
Ratajkowski wrote back, “I would love to. Waiting for the right one to come along. I’ve always been someone who’s more attracted to vibe than specifics of physicality so sometimes it’ll just randomly hit me, and I’ll be like, ‘Whoa, I’m attracted to this person!’”
She went on to discuss embracing her singledom, describing it as “the first time I’ve ever been single in my life.” (In Harper’s Bazaar, Ratajkowski described her former identity as being “a bit of a ‘pick-me girl’ in the sense that I wasn’t very good at deciding what I liked. I really wanted to be chosen.”)
“I’m proud of myself [for this new era],” she told Brill. “[The] younger version of myself would have prob settled for some mid dude just to have a bf. Glad I’m not in that era anymore.”
Brill then continued the conversation, saying, “You are really changing the conversation around what it means to be a single woman who’s having the time of her life… Giving zero fucks. Or are you not loving the public part?”
“Haha. That’s nice to hear,” Ratajkowski replied. “I would def love more privacy, but I also hate when celebrities complain about the lack thereof. It’s definitely just part of the game… But naw, when people hate on my dating life, it’s just uncool. Let me live. I’ve been through some shit. I want to have some fun sometimes.”
“How does one meet EmRata? Do your friends set you up?” Brill asked.
“I’ve only gone on one date from an app but it was with someone who I also had mutual friends with,” Ratajkowski said, although she didn’t specify which dating app it was. “I’m really open to meeting people whatever way! But I do think mutuals is always a nice way to vet people.”
HommeGirls Volume 9, featuring Ratajkowski’s full cover story, is on sale here. Volume 9 will also be available on select newsstands starting today.
