Eagles send J.J. Arcega-Whiteside to Seahawks in preseason trade

The Philadelphia Eagles have moved on from wide receiver/tight end J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, trading him to the Seattle Seahawks.

The NFL just got done with their first week of preseason football. With teams slowly but surely trimming down their rosters to the 53-player requirement ahead of the 2022 campaign, there was bound to be a trade between two teams. Sure enough, that has happened between two teams in the NFC — the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Eagles are trading wide receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside to the Seahawks in exchange for defensive back Ugo Amadi.

J.J. Arcega-Whiteside’s stint in Philadelphia over

The Eagles used their second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to select Arcega-Whiteside out of Stanford. He was just coming off of a junior season where he caught 63 passes for 1,059 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Cardinal. Yet, he could not replicate that production with the Eagles.

Arcega-Whiteside started in just seven games in his three-year career with the Eagles (40 games), where he recorded 16 receptions for 290 yards and one touchdown on 35 targets. This past season, Arcega-Whiteside caught two passes for 36 yards on just five targets.

This offseason, it was reported that Arcega-Whiteside would be making the jump from wide receiver to tight end, and he was listed as such on Philadelphia’s depth chart. Now, it remains to be seen whether he will continue with that role switch with the Seahawks, or if he will be moved to wide receiver.

As for Amadi, he was set to be released by the Seahawks, per ESPN’s Brady Henderson. Amadai was selected in the fourth-round of the 2019 draft out of Oregon. Now, he gets a new opportunity with the Eagles.

In three years with Seattle, Amadi recorded 125 combined tackles, 13 defended passes, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception. In coverage last season (17 games), Umadi surrendered 48 receptions for 465 yards and one touchdown on 61 targets, per Pro Football Reference.

Both players will look to earn a spot on their new teams, as the final cut-down date ahead of the 2022 season is Tuesday, Aug. 30.
