Doc Rivers hurls diss on past Clippers team in wake of 76ers’ current title capabilities
Doc Rivers got the best and ultimate confidence for the Philadelphia 76ers to win the title this 2022-23 season. Philly enters the postseason stage holding a top-three record in the Eastern Conference, bannered by potential league MVP winner Joel Embiid and his star floor general James Harden.
As such, the longtime coach got a different notion with regards to his past L.A. Clippers team that went on to disappoint on multiple occasions. When he appeared on ESPN’s NBA Today, Rivers was asked what former club of his reminds him of his current 76ers squad.
“Definitely more leaning towards [2008] Boston than the Clippers,” Rivers said. “Not trying to take anything away from that team. That team was never going to win when you look back at it. We just didn’t get along well enough as a group and you can’t win without cooperation.”
Rivers didn’t specify what specific team of his Clippers tenure he is referring to.
In his six-year run as the Clippers head coach, Rivers was blessed with two different contending stages in the franchise, which started in Blake Griffin-Chris Paul era from 2013 to 2017 and was followed by the reigns of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in 2019-2020. Neither of these core teams went on to clinch the team that very elusive title with Rivers, and coincidentally, both of them even became a part of two of the most blunderous choke jobs in league history under his watch.
While not winning a title with L.A. has been a huge crack in his reputation and hall of fame coaching case, Rivers can only hope that he can finally get over the hump and get another chamlionship ring this year with the 76ers.
