Dallas Cowboys reportedly still trying to sign Odell Beckham Jr.

The Dallas Cowboys apparently aren’t giving up on signing Odell Beckham Jr., and reportedly met with the free agent this week. 

Never doubt the resilience of Jerry Jones, or his ability to scheme.

Despite the Dallas Cowboys seemingly taking themselves out of the Odell Beckham Jr. sweepstakes on Monday by signing TY Hilton, all cards apparently remain on the table.

Jones and the Cowboys are reportedly still interested in OBJ and haven’t given up hope that a deal can be reached to add a superstar weapon to Dak Prescott’s offensive arsenal.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, the Cowboys met with the free agent wide receiver on Monday, and it sounds like the meeting trended toward positive and productive.

“I’m told the Cowboys and Odell Beckham Jr’s camp spoke Monday night in an effort to find common ground on basic terms and timing. While a window remains open to how this season unfolds, right now OBJ’s zoning in on training and determining his best path at the right value, per source,” Anderson reported late Tuesday evening.

The report is both surprising yet not at all shocking. Within the context of the Cowboys moves this week it’s a little puzzling that the team would sign a veteran wide out who many saw as a concession on landing OBJ yet still be working toward a deal.

Will Dallas Cowboys still sign Odell Beckham Jr.?

Zooming out a bit, however, paints a clearer picture of the Cowboys plans.

It’s been widely reported that Beckham still needs to rehab his knee, and won’t be ready to go as soon as he signs a deal. OBJ has been reluctant to commit to returning during the regular season, recently stating that he would prefer to return for the playoffs.

This creates a scenario where Jerry Jones can have his cake and eat it too. Dallas can use Hilton immediately, giving Dak another weapon to get familiar with as the Cowboys chase down the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East. If Dallas eventually ends up being the landing spot for OBJ, it now has two new targets that defenses need to worry about in addition to existing ones like CeeDee Lamb and the duo of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard.

All of this is assuming the Cowboys are indeed the place where Beckham ends up. But the pieces are in place for Jones to have sneakily pulled off a late-season coup as he pushes his chips to the center betting on a Super Bowl returning to Dallas.
