Cowboys should rush to sign this wide receiver with Julio Jones in Tampa

The Dallas Cowboys watched as Julio Jones signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They should make a run at one of the top wide receivers available in free agency.

Just as players began reporting for training camp this week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers showed that they are still all-in for another run to the Super Bowl. On Tuesday, July 26, the Buccaneers signed former Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans wide receiver Julio Jones to a one-year contract. That gives Tom Brady a receiving corps of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jones.

Entering camp, Jones was the top wide receiver available, despite his production dropping in an injury-plagued 2021 season. The Dallas Cowboys do have a need at wide receiver after they traded Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns and lost Cedrick Wilson Jr. in free agency to the Miami Dolphins.

Fans know that team owner Jerry Jones loves his big-name wide receivers. That is why he should jump at the opportunity to sign Odell Beckham Jr. before any other organization does so.

Beckham had quite the year in 2021. He started off the year with the Cleveland Browns, but both parties reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. Beckham ultimately joined the stacked Los Angeles Rams offense to make a run at his first Super Bowl title.

At Super Bowl 56, Beckham made a huge impact at the start of the first half, catching the first touchdown pass of the game to give the Rams an early lead. Unfortunately, Beckham tore his ACL later on. The Rams were still able to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20, giving Beckham his first Super Bowl ring.

In his eight regular-season games with the Rams, Beckham recorded 27 receptions for 305 yards and five touchdowns on 48 targets. Through Los Angeles’ four playoff games, Beckham caught 21-of-26 targets for 288 yards and two touchdowns.

It is not exactly ideal for the Cowboys to sign a player coming off of a torn ACL. Dallas is already dealing with that as Michael Gallup, who re-signed with the team on a lucrative five-year contract this offseason, is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 17 last year. But, the Cowboys have to bolster the depth chart, especially when looking at the division.

The Philadelphia Eagles are primed to be finalists for the NFC East crown this season, as they traded for A.J. Brown to add to their wide receiver corps alongside DeVonta Smith, Quez Watkins, and Zach Pascal. Then, there are the Washington Commanders, who have Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, and Jahan Dotson as their top receivers. The New York Giants, despite the new regime cleaning up the mess that was the Dave Gettleman era, have a pretty potent receiving corps of Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney, Sterling Shepard, WanDale Robinson, and Darius Slayton if they are all healthy.

Dallas needs to add some depth at the position behind CeeDee Lamb if they plan on making a run for a playoff spot. Having Beckham on the roster for his potential return could do wonders for the Cowboys.
