Everton and Liverpool played out a pulsating 2-2 draw in what was the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, with James Tarkowski’s dramatic stoppage-time volley rescuing a point for the Toffees.
The game lived up to the historic rivalry’s reputation, with plenty of goals, controversy, and late drama.
Everton struck first through Beto, only for Liverpool to respond swiftly via Alexis Mac Allister. Mohamed Salah then appeared to have sealed victory for the Reds in the second half, but Tarkowski’s stunning late strike ensured the spoils were shared in an unforgettable encounter.
The Toffees made a dream start in front of a raucous home crowd. After being awarded a free-kick in midfield, Jarrad Branthwaite caught Liverpool’s defence off guard with a clever through ball, which Beto latched onto.
The Everton striker showed great composure to slot past Alisson and put his side ahead in the 11th minute.
However, Everton’s lead was short-lived as Liverpool responded almost immediately. Salah, operating on the right flank, delivered a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where Mac Allister rose highest to glance a header beyond Jordan Pickford into the far corner.
Just 16 minutes in, the game was already level at 1-1, setting the stage for a thrilling contest.

The remainder of the first half was fiercely contested, with challenges flying in as both sides battled for control.
Five players were booked before the break, illustrating the intensity of the clash. Liverpool dominated possession, but Everton had the clearer chances, with Abdoulaye Doucoure missing a golden opportunity to restore the lead when he failed to hit the target from close range.
Everton started the second half brightly, creating several opportunities to regain the lead. Jack Harrison and Doucoure both had efforts that failed to trouble Alisson, while Beto continued to cause problems for Liverpool’s defence.
Despite Everton’s pressure, it was Liverpool who struck next in the 73rd minute. Curtis Jones’ initial shot was bravely blocked by Branthwaite, but the rebound fell kindly to Salah, who made no mistake in firing home to put the Reds ahead for the first time in the game.
With time running out, Everton pushed forward desperately in search of an equaliser. Substitute Tim Iroegbunam made a significant impact, and his header in the 98th minute set up a moment of magic. The ball dropped kindly for Tarkowski, who unleashed a thunderous volley into the top corner, sending Goodison Park into raptures.
A lengthy VAR check followed for a possible offside, but the goal was given, ensuring a dramatic end to the contest.
As tensions boiled over, both Curtis Jones and Doucoure received second yellow cards deep into stoppage time, reducing both teams to ten men. But by then, the damage had been done, and Everton had secured a crucial point against their fierce rivals.
The draw does extend Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points, but there was fury on the pitch and sidelines following the officiating at the end of the game.
The result with give chasers Arsenal renewed hope that they can close the gap to their title rivals in the coming weeks.
