Comparing the top cordless vacuums

It can be challenging to find the perfect vacuum that fits your lifestyle and your budget.

That’s why here at Post Wanted, we are constantly trying out the newest products to let you know exactly how they can work for you. Recently, our Commerce Editorial Director, Barret Wertz, tested the Shark Cordless PowerDetect Clean & Empty system firsthand. This got us thinking.

Why not put it to the test next to one of the most hyped cordless stick vacuums on the market — the Dyson V15 Detect — to see how well it really sucks next to the competition.

Both cordless vacuums are easy to recharge and can pick up all sorts of hair without getting tangled, but we found a clear winner. Keep reading to find out.

Shark vs Dyson: First Impressions

The Shark PowerDetect features a DuoClean Detect nozzle, which excels at picking up debris in both directions instead of just pushing it around when going backward like most other vacuums. It’s equipped with dirt-sensing technology and works on all floor types with a 2x brush roll system that doesn’t get tangled with pet or human hair.

Shark even claims it offers “the best debris cleaning of any cordless vacuum.” Plus, it’s unique Dirt Detect feature features auto-adjust suction power that changes based on the size of your mess.

While Dyson is a strong competitor with its Fluffy Optic cleaner head designed to pick up microscopic dust and an interestingly designed hair screw tool that sucks up long hair without tangling, it’s significantly costlier — by over $300 MSRP, to be exact.

And for what Shark offers, we’re left scratching our heads as to why there is a jump in price.

Shark vs Dyson: Performance and Experience

“The Dirt Detect feature is like having a vacuum that thinks for you, adjusting power based on how dirty your floor is,” Wertz said. “Let’s not forget the Auto-Empty dock, which takes the hassle out of emptying the canister.”

Yeah, it has an Auto-Empty docking station that recharges and self-empties, something the Dyson V15 Detect model doesn’t have.

Instead, Dyson uses a docking station to recharge, but only if you screw it to the wall yourself near an outlet. It doesn’t magically empty your dirt into a canister, either, and it never will. So, if you struggle with allergies, this is a blessed way to keep the sniffles at bay because, according to Shark’s testing, the auto-empty feature locks away over 99.97% of dust and allergens.

It’s often hard to find a cordless vacuum to keep up with your cleaning routine. The Shark can last up to 70 minutes on a single charge, while the Dyson maxes out at 60 minutes. That’s just 10 extra minutes, but if your vacuum dies when you’re almost done cleaning, it can feel like an eternity for clean freaks doing the Lord’s work.

If you struggle with hard-to-reach places like under a couch or behind a counter, Shark provides a MultiFLEX arm that bends back and forth easily to tackle the most awkward reaches with ease and efficiency.

Our only complaint is that the MultiFLEX arm took a little force to lock into place, leading to a few frustrations early on. If that’s a concern for you, we recommend the simpler cordless stick model from Dyson. However, either the MultiFLEX arm is bending or you are, so keep that in mind.

Shark vs Dyson: Final Verdict

All in all, we found the Shark Cordless PowerDetect Clean & Empty System worth the (lower) price. Conveniently, it’s $100 off that already less-than-Dyson-on-sale price of $399.99. We highly recommend jumping on this sale before it ends because this vacuum is worth its weight in gold (dollars preferred).
