Chiefs interested in former Pro Bowl sack artist as training camp starts

The Kansas City Chiefs, looking to strengthen their roster, are bringing in a Pro Bowl pass rusher for a visit on July 27.

The Kansas City Chiefs fell just short of making it to the Super Bowl for the third consecutive year this past season. This offseason, they saw talent leave, such as safety Tyrann Mathieu, cornerback Charvarius Ward, and defensive end Carlos Dunlap. It certainly did not help that the AFC has gotten unbelievably tougher this offseason. But, it appears that the team has set its focus on filling one of the voids on their defense.

According to ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Chiefs are bringing in former Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals pass rusher Carlos Dunlap for a visit on July 27.

Chiefs bringing in Pro Bowl pass rusher Carlos Dunlap for visit

The Chiefs looked to fill the void left at the edge rusher position after Ingram left in free agency to sign with the Miami Dolphins. Even though they did select Purdue’s George Karlaftis in the first-round, it appears that the team is interested in bringing in some veteran experience and a player who can get to the quarterback.

Dunlap spent the majority of his career with the Bengals, where he put up double-digit sacks in a season once (2015). But, he did post 6 or more sacks in 9 of his first 10 years in the league.

But in 2020, Dunlap demanded a trade off of the team. Ultimately, the Seattle Seahawks were able to acquire him in exchange for offensive lineman B.J. Finney and a 2021 seventh-round pick. Through eight games with the Seahawks in 2020, Dunlap posted five sacks, six tackles for loss, and 18 pressures, per Pro Football Reference.

This past season, Dunlap posted 21 quarterback pressures, 8.5 sacks, and four quarterback knockdowns through 17 games. Dunlap was released by the Seahawks this offseason.

The Chiefs are bringing in Dunlap for a visit. Whether they will sign him remains to be seen.
