Chiefs could steal star receiver from division rival this offseason
If the Chargers have to cut star wide receiver Keenan Allen to get under the cap, the Chiefs could be one of his most intriguing suitors.
Last year Keenan Allen made headlines in Chiefs country by claiming Tyreek Hill’s departure was going to “expose some people.”
He was clearly wrong about that. Kansas City is in the Super Bowl even without Hill, utilizing a more balanced receiving corps to keep their offense chugging along at full speed.
Allen could even join that receiver group next season.
Chiefs could pick up Keenan Allen if Chargers cut him
Allen is one of the most likely players the Chargers could cut this offseason to get under the cap, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic (subscription required). LA could save up to $17.5 million by cutting the wide receiver.
Of course, doing so would put him on the open market with the ability to sign for anyone, even a bitter AFC West rival.
The soon-to-be 31-year-old receiver was a Pro Bowler each year between 2017 and 2021. However, he dealt with a hamstring injury early in the 2022 season and missed out.
That’s not to say he can’t still perform at a high level. In 10 games he caught 66 passes for 752 yards and four touchdowns. Average that out to a full 17-game season and he would have easily matched his numbers from prior seasons.
The injury issues are definitely a reason to be slightly wary about pursuing Allen but his production has been so consistent when healthy, he’d be a dangerous addition to Patrick Mahomes’ arsenal of weapons.
There will be plenty of teams after Allen. Only one of them will offer the chance to catch passes from Mahomes, which has proven a very good route to going to the Super Bowl.
It’s pretty clear Chiefs fans would be quick to forgive Allen for his previous trash talk if he wanted to come to Kansas City.
