Chelsea signing ‘buzzing’ after completing transfer
New Chelsea signing Renato Veiga has said he is “buzzing” to join the Premier League side after completing his move from Swiss side Basel.
Sporting Lisbon youth product Veiga had a breakthrough season in 2023/24, establishing himself as one of the finest players in the Swiss top flight.
“This is one of the biggest clubs in England – the biggest, for me,” the Portugal under-21 international added.
“I’m absolutely buzzing to be here. I’m just really excited to get started.”
Chelsea transfer news: Veiga signs
Chelsea have spent around £12 million on the 20-year-old, according to a report by The Athletic last week.
Veiga is the fifth player to move to Stamford Bridge since the appointment of former Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca on June 3.
Midfielders Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Omari Kellyman, forward Marc Guiu and defender Tosin Adarabioyo have also arrived under the Italian.
A defender or midfielder, Veiga has signed a seven-year deal with the club which includes a further one-year option.
A red card and ankle injury meant he missed the end of Basel’s season as the club stayed up via the Swiss Super League relegation play-offs.
He will now be part of an expensively-assembled squad aiming to build on an underwhelming sixth-placed finish in 2023/24.
Chelsea 2024/25: ‘Mentality and culture’
“When you join a club, you try to analyse what the club and team needs to improve and do the right things,” Maresca told Chelsea’s website last week.
“It’s clear we need to create, as soon as possible, the right mentality and culture – a culture that the fans can be proud of. This is very important.
“We are going to try to be an aggressive team on the ball and off the ball and we need to create this connection between the fans and the club, especially at home.”
