Chelsea contract extension until 2033 ‘great’, says Senegal striker

Nicolas Jackson has said he hopes to “do amazing” at Chelsea after signing a two-year contract extension to keep him at the club until 2033.

Senegal striker Jackson scored 17 times in all club competitions in 2023/24, describing the total as “okay” after joining from Villarreal for £31.8 million in June 2023.

“The first season for any player or any striker who comes to Chelsea is not easy,” said Jackson, speaking to Chelsea’s website. “I am not very happy with 17 goals because I played the whole season without injuries, but it’s okay.

“I did good – now I hope to continue and do amazing. I am still in the learning process, learning every day and trying to improve what I can do and work on what I cannot do.

“It feels great the club has confidence in me. I am working very hard. I am very happy to extend my contract and stay here for many years.”

Jackson scored 14 times and provided five assists in the Premier League in his first top-flight campaign, starting 39 of Chelsea’s 44 matches in all competitions.

His most memorable performance came in a 4-1 win at Tottenham in November, scoring Chelsea’s final three goals between the 75th and 97th minutes after his side had fallen behind early on.

“When I was young, I was a number 10 or a false nine, because I like to move and drop deep,” said Jackson, who started at Senegalese club Casa Sports and joined Villarreal in 2019, a year before current Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s successful spell in charge of the Spanish side.

“When I came to Europe, Unai changed that and put me as a fixed number nine, waiting for the ball and playing more in the box, trying to run in behind. I’m grateful. I try to work harder to improve every day in that position.”

The 23-year-old is likely to have negotiated a pay rise as part of his new deal following a bright start to the season including two goals and an assist in Chelsea’s last two league games.

His previous salary was around £3.4m basic, according to Spotrac, which the site says would put him among Chelsea’s lowest earners, at around £65,000 per week.

New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is an “amazing coach and person” who is “more or less like a father”, Jackson added.

The Blues started Maresca’s reign with a 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City and have proceeded to win at Wolves and draw 1-1 at Stamford Bridge against Crystal Palace, with Jackson scoring the opener.
