The Undeniable Brilliance of Liberty Wing Betnijah Laney

Tone setters. Every successful team needs one.

Former Rutgers University standout Betnijah Laney is just that for the New York Liberty. Don’t be fooled by her smile. When she steps between the lines, the versatile wing is prepared to do whatever it takes to win.

She’s also played a pivotal role in New York snapping the franchise’s postseason streak—for the first time in over two decades, the Libs are headed to the WNBA Finals and will match up against the Las Vegas Aces for the championship.

On both ends of the floor, No. 44 is invaluable. On a roster stacked with superstars, including two former MVPs, the Delaware-native is a piece the Liberty cannot do without. Laney netted 20 or more points in each of the final three contests of the WNBA Semifinals against the Connecticut Sun.

Betnijah Laney and the Liberty starred on the cover of SLAM 246. Read the cover story here.

With her team’s back against the wall on its home floor in Game 2, the former second-round selection showed up. In a must-win game, Laney connected on five shots from beyond the arc, the most she has converted in any game of her career—two of which came in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter.

Through the first two rounds of the playoffs, Laney sits in the top-two of New York’s field goal percentage, three pointers made, and total points. Only three players in the postseason have contributed to more points in the painted area than the 2020 WNBA Most Improved Player.

She was one of just seven players in the entire W this season to have a three-point shooting percentage over 39 percent while taking 1.5 or more threes per contest. The corner is her domain. The result is almost inevitable if you fail to close her out.

“B’s built like this,” Brondello said following the clincher in Connecticut, “I know it was a little bit of a process early in the season. We were trying to work it out how it all combined, but I think we took off when we found “B” getting more integrated into the offense because she’s an amazing scorer. We just didn’t want it to just be “B” the defensive player.”

The defensive side of the ball is the part of the game what she is best known for. In a series against a historically prolific Aces’ offense, Laney’s ability to guard more than one position will be critical.

The 2023 Commissioner’s Cup Final was a perfect example of what she can do on that end of the floor against Las Vegas. The 6-foot wing was tasked with the responsibility of predominately guarding Kelsey Plum, and Chelsea Gray—in the third quarter, No. 44 was locked in when playing halfcourt defense on Plum in isolation, and took on the task of marking up Gray full-court after a Stewart three.

“Whether its guarding the other team’s best player, or making plays, she is someone who knows what she is good at,” Stewart said about Laney following a win over Washington. “To be able to have her on our side is huge for us. She continues to keep playing, giving us that sense of clarity when times get tough.”

Marcus Smart: “I’ve never been fake”

Photo: Memphis Grizzlies/Twitter

Marcus Smart wore a grin from ear to ear during his inaugural media day with the Memphis Grizzlies. Expressing that he’s settling in well, Smart mentioned that he’s already embracing a leadership position within his newfound team.

“It’s been great,” Smart said. “As they told you already, I’ve been talking defense in there with those guys, but you realize right away that this is a group of guys that are hungry. They want to win and are trying to get better. They’re asking me questions; we’re laughing and joking, but we’re excited.”

Smart is set to bear a significant load in Memphis, particularly with Ja Morant sidelined for the initial 25 games due to suspension.

Smart affirmed his readiness to shoulder the leadership responsibilities for the Grizzlies, emphasizing his commitment to approaching the role with the same qualities that have defined him throughout his career.

“Just continue to be me. I’ve never been fake, and anyone who knows me understands that,” he said. “By doing that, it allows that genuineness to come out. Figuring out the balance and everything else will work itself out.”

The Miami Heat are making a forward-looking move by exercising their third-year option on Nikola Jovic, ensuring his presence with the team for the 2024-25 season.

This decision guarantees the remainder of his rookie-scale contract, as reported by Ira Widerman on X.

Jovic, a 20-year-old Serbian forward selected as the No. 27 pick in the 2022 draft, is currently on a four-year contract worth $11.5 million with the Heat.

During his rookie campaign, Jovic made appearances in 15 regular-season games for Miami, averging 5.5 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13.6 minutes per game.

Donovan Mitchell keeps extension door open with Cavaliers

Photo: Cleveland Cavaliers/Twitter

Donovan Mitchell has made it clear that he won’t be signing an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers this year.

However, he wants everyone to know that the door for an extension remains wide open next offseason.

“I want it to be known that I still have the opportunity to sign an extension next summer. I don’t think a lot of people understand that aspect,” Mitchell emphasized, as reported by Tony Pesta of Fear The Sword.

Mitchell, who arrived in Cleveland last summer through a trade, had an impressive season, averaging 28.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in 35.8 minutes per game.

Currently, the 27-year-old shooting guard has three more years left on his existing 5-year, $163 million contract, which stretches until the 2025-26 season (with a player option for the final year).

Michael Jordan cracks Forbes 400 list with $3 billion net worth

Photo: Stephen Curry/YouTube screenshot

Former NBA superstar Michael Jordan has achieved a historic milestone, entering the Forbes 400 list of America’s wealthiest individuals with a staggering net worth of $3 billion.

Jordan’s financial success is a result of not only his legendary basketball career, where he earned $94 million during 15 NBA seasons, but also his lucrative endorsement deals.

His partnership with Nike, in particular, has been immensely profitable, with his annual royalty check from the brand reaching $260 million.

However, Jordan’s most significant financial windfall came when he sold his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets for a remarkable $3 billion, making it the second-highest sale price in NBA history.

This achievement marks the first time a professional athlete has made it onto the prestigious Forbes 400 list. Jordan’s influence extends far beyond basketball, with his Air Jordan brand at Nike being a cultural phenomenon.

The Air Jordan sneaker line, initially released in 1985, continues to generate massive revenue, with $6.6 billion in annual wholesale revenue for the Jordan Brand.

Beyond his basketball career and endorsement deals, Jordan has diversified his investments, including equity stakes in various companies and co-owning a NASCAR Cup Series team, 23XI Racing, with driver Denny Hamlin.

2023 Black Ops Awards: Chris Brickley Names Jimmy Butler, Tom Brady

Every summer, trainer Chris Brickley’s star-studded Black Ops open runs garner buzz on social media. It’s an opportunity for basketball fans to see not only what their favorite players are up to, but to watch them hoop and match up against other top names in the game.

He initially named the runs “Black Ops” because he wanted the workouts and open runs to be discreet. Here, Brickley is giving you an insider breakdown of another year of Black Ops Basketball.

The 2023 SLAM x BlackOps Awards

Breakout Season: Bones Hyland

This was my first off-season working with Bones. Every time we worked out, he was very impressive. I was surprised at how well he shot the ball along with his positive attitude. I think the Clippers are a great spot for him and I’m ready for him to have a breakout year.

Mentor Award: Donovan Mitchell

Over the past few off-seasons, the Mentor Award went to Carmelo Anthony. Donavan Mitchell is now the new recipient of that award—not only is he a mentor towards young players in the NBA but he also is a mentor to some of the nation’s most elite. After workouts, he would talk to guys like Ian Jackson and Elliot Cadeau and give them some real gems on the journey of becoming a pro.

Draft Day Award: Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore

The Houston Rockets had a great NBA Draft. I think both Amen and Cam could have immediate impacts this season. Both players play both sides of the ball and are super eager to get better. Shout out to the scouting department in Houston, they did their thing.

The Future Award: Cooper Flagg

I think Cooper is a once in a generation type of player. He is super versatile and can finish above the rim, with both hands. He’s a constant matchup problem on offense and great on the defensive end. He’s a beast. His knack for blocking shots is as good as I’ve seen at the high school level and he has something that you can’t teach. He has that DOG in him.

Prior to reclassifying, Cooper was one of the most impressive players at the Brickley invitational.

Best BlackOps Duo: Klay Thompson and Kevin Love

Klay Thompson and Kevin Love grew up together, but they never played on the same team. This offseason when they played on the same team at the Black Ops run, it was special to watch. They won five straight games, which I think was the first time a team did so in BlackOps history. The way they complimented each other, you would have thought they were teammates in the past.

Klay was moving out the ball, K-Love was finding him and vice versa. It seemed like they both didn’t miss a shot.

Shooting Award: Paige Bueckers

We did a bunch of shooting drills, but Paige hit 29 threes in a row. That was the most threes we’ve seen consecutively all offseason. I’m excited to watch Paige play this year at UConn, she’s going to remind people how good she is. The last time she’s played a full season, she was college basketball’s Player of the Year.

Surprise Player Award: Ty Jerome

Ty has been in the League for four seasons. The Cavaliers will be his fourth team. I think with the right opportunity Ty is going to shock a lot of people in the League. He’s very elite from a skill standpoint. There’s nothing that he can’t do: he shoots at an elite level, his ball handling is elite and so is his decision-making. I think he could be a bright spot off the bench for the Cavs this year.

Early bird Award: Jimmy Butler

Nobody works out as early in the morning as Jimmy Butler. He comes with a different type of energy in the mornings; he’s going to have either country music or heavy metal blasting on the speakers and the gym is going to feel like a sauna. I think I still dream about the number 78— that’s what the gym needed to be set for every time Jimmy worked out. Not only did he get a good workout but everyone in the gym got in a good sweat, too.

Jimmy is ready to have one of the best seasons of his career! He had a great summer of workouts.

Best Black Ops Matchup: Donovan Mitchell vs Trae Young

It was fun seeing two of the most elite guards in the NBA go at each other. Originally, Donovan was just supposed to work out and watch the run but once Trae arrived, he persuaded Donovan to play. Both of them were going at each other and the series ended 3-2. Donovan’s team got the win for the day.

High Flyers Award: Obi Toppin and Jacob Toppin

Every time the Toppin brothers came to a run, both of them were above the rim the entire time. They both posterized many players this offseason. I’m excited to watch Obi with the Pacers.

Most viral picture picture: Jan (Russell Westbrook workout)

Shoutout our intern from Vietnam, Jan. Jan had a hard task all offseason with guarding  some of the NBA’s best players. He definitely had a difficult time guarding Russell Westbrook! I don’t blame him but this picture in particular went viral across the world. We joke about it with him to this day.

Most Viral Moment: Tom Brady

The most viral moment was definitely the Tom Brady workout. It got 34 million views across all platforms within the first 48 hours. On my page, it was shared 58,600 times. That’s the most of any video this summer. Tom Brady is the GOAT!

Most Surprising Shooter Award: H.E.R.

Grammy award-winning artist H.E.R. has developed a big-time jumpshot!! In the past, the best artist shooting award would go to J. Cole, but I think Gabi would make a run for that award now. She can really shoot it. Ask Jimmy Butler.

‘He’s Next’ Award: Kiyan Anthony

Not only did he grow a few inches this summer, but Kiyan Anthony really made a name for himself on the EYBL Circuit. He has developed some of his dad’s footwork, which has made him one of the most elite grassroot players in the country. Sky’s the limit for Kiyan.

Football Player Hooper Award: Tom Brady and Steffon Diggs

If I was starting a basketball team of NFL players. I would definitely have Stefon Diggs as my point guard and Tom Brady as my shooting guard. Both of these guys are really talented on the basketball court. I would say Tom Brady is a better shooter, but Diggs is a better playmaker. Diggs has bounce, too.

Tyler Herro reacts to Trail Blazers not wanting him

Photo: Miami Heat /Twitter

The offseason was filled with trade rumors, and Tyler Herro found himself at the center of one involving the Portland Trail Blazers. However, the trade never materialized, leaving Herro with the Miami Heat.

When Damian Lillard expressed his desire to be traded to Miami, the Heat offered trade packages that included Herro. However, Portland was uninterested in the young guard. Ultimately, no deal was struck, and Lillard was sent to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Recently, Herro was asked about the Trail Blazers’ disinterest in acquiring him.

“I know my value,” Herro confidently stated. “For the teams that didn’t want me, that’s on you. For the teams that do want me, you’ll see why they wanted me.”

When questioned about the upcoming regular-season matchups against the Trail Blazers, Herro remained unfazed.

“I’m ready to play against the best. Portland isn’t the best, so I’m not worried about them,” Herro responded.

James Harden remains in Houston – report

Photo: Philadelphia 76ers/Twitter

As the drama surrounding James Harden’s trade request continues, the former MVP was conspicuously absent from the 76ers’ Media Day.

Harden’s desire for a trade to the Clippers was well-documented this summer, but as the preseason kicks off, no deal has materialized.

The rift between Harden and Philadelphia’s general manager, Daryl Morey, has reached a point of no return, with the superstar publicly expressing his dissatisfaction and stating that he would never play for Morey’s team again.

Recent report from Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports indicates that Harden has returned to Houston, where he enjoyed a significant portion of his illustrious career.

According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the superstar guard is expected to join Sixers training camp as soon as today.
