Where Was Season 4 of Stranger Things Filmed?

After almost three years, Stranger Things is back this summer with season 4 and it has been way too long for fans. The excitement for the new season has only grown with the delay, but there were a lot of issues around filming. The main one was the pandemic, which caused filming to halt and then begin again in October of 2020. Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson, told Us Weekly in December 2020 that it definitely changed the way things worked on set.

“It’s definitely an unorthodox form of shooting,” said Matarazzo. “Everyone on set has been very diligent about wearing their PPE. Even for our off-camera work, we keep our masks and goggles on. Lots of distancing. Separation during lunch, and transport from base to set.”

So where was this “unorthodox” filming happening? Warning: minor spoilers ahead.

To start, there were quite a few locations that were needed for the show because some of the biggest characters, Eleven and Byers, have moved across the country to California when the season opens. Dustin, Lucas, and Max are still in Hawkins, Indiana, and Hopper is not disintegrated— but he is trapped deep in Russian territory.

Scenes set in “Hawkins” are generally shot in Atlanta, Georgia, but Decider reports that the scenes in California were actually filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Eleven and Will are attending a fictional school called Californian Lenora Hills High School, and those scenes were filmed at Albuquerque’s Eldorado High School. Other scenes happened at Albuquerque’s Roller King skating rink and in Los Lunas, New Mexico.

All the shots in Russia were done in Vilnius, Lithuania. The scenes where Hopper is seen in a jail cell are remarkably authentic in that they were filmed in Lukiškes Prison, which is centuries old. It is no longer in operation, except for TV and movie making. Pretty much the perfect place for Stranger Things.

Yes, Even Oily Skin Needs Hydration. Here Are The Only 14 Moisturizers You’ll Need.

Delmaine Donson

The first rule of getting soft, expensive-looking skin? Never forget to moisturize. Sure, there are more critical rules (always wear sunscreen! invest in a proper facial cleanser!), but whether you drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fruits, and exercise—or not—moisturizing your skin is just as vital as cleansing. Finding the most excellent skin-saving moisturizer is easy because everyone fits into one or more of the following skin-type categories: oily, dry, combo, or normal, and each category has its own set of moisturizing serums and creams.

Believe it or not, oily skin needs just as much hydration as normal, dry, and combination skin. “It’s a misconception that people with oily skin do not need to use moisturizers. Stripping the skin of oil can interrupt the skin barrier and cause unwanted irritation. So it’s important to find a moisturizer that does not add additional oil to the skin but is hydrating,”

Dr. Lian Mack, MD, board-certified dermatologist, tells ELLE.com. “Consumers should be looking for products that are both oil-free and non-comedogenic (meaning it does not clog pores or cause acne), and that hydrates the skin with water-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid.” Good thing lightweight, oil-free moisturizers are just a click away.

Ahead, shop the best drugstore, luxury, and derm-approved face creams to keep your skin hydrated, not greasy.

1

Best for Daytime Use

CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30

When searching for the perfect moisturizer, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Joyce Imahiyerobo-Ip, MD suggests looking for products that say “non-comedogenic,” which means that “it doesn’t contain ingredients that will clog your pores and cause you to break out. CeraVe’s AM Moisturizer is great because it combines a lightweight moisturizer with sunscreen (which is also a must for everyone).”

2

Best Splurge

SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel

The gel texture allows this hydrating formula to easily absorb into the skin without leaving a heavy film or a greasy finish. Plus, a little goes a long way if the price has you a bit startled.

3

Best Gel Formula

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel

  • Not best for sensitive skin

Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Water Gel is basically a cool splash of water in a bottle.

4

Best for Sensitive Skin

Moisturizing Lotion

Having oily and sensitive skin isn’t the easiest to treat but Vanicream’s Lite Lotion comes highly recommended. “If you have extremely sensitive skin or are prone to allergic reactions, I suggest you try Vanicream’s light lotion,” Imahiyerobo-Ip added. “Again, this product is non-comedogenic and free of any preservatives or allergens that may irritate the skin.”

5

Derm-Favorite

Oil Absorbing Moisturizer with SPF 30

According to Lian Mack, Cetaphil’s Oil Control moisturizer is great because of its key ingredient, a mineral called silica. “Like clay, silica is a mineral that helps to absorb oil,” she says. “The micro pearl technology of this product makes the skin appear matte. It has broad-spectrum coverage for both UVA/UVB rays. Reducing exposure to the sun rays prevents activation of the sebaceous or oil-producing glands in the skin.”

6

Best for a Lightweight Feel

The Water Cream Oil-Free Pore Minimizing Moisturizer

The pretty mint pot looks as beautiful on the outside as the nutrient-packed ingredients bottled up on the inside. It’s lightweight and has a water-like consistency that absorbs seamlessly into the skin.

7

Best for Layering Makeup

boscia Green Tea Oil-free Moisturizer

  • Works as a primer as well

You likely drink a cup of green tea every morning, but did you know it also works wonders for your skin? The fast-absorbing formula melts into the skin for a supple, matte base to create a flawless canvas for your makeup.

8

Best for Luxurious Feel

Cloud Cushion Plush Moisturizer with Ceramides + Peptides

Airy and lightweight, Eadem’s moisturizer feels like nothing on the skin with a formula that does so much. While its main function is to reduce the appearance of dark spots and dryness, it also hydrates and plumps the skin to reveal youthful radiance.

9

Best for Mattifying

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat Daily Moisturizer for Oily Skin (1.35 fl. oz.)

  • Can be layered under makeup
  • Doesn’t stay matte for too long

Reach for this moisturizer when you want to stay matte all day long. This oil-free lotion not only moisturizes the skin, but it helps to improve the appearance of pores and keeps you hydrated without any signs of grease.

10

Oil and Pore Control Mattifier Broad Spectrum SPF 45 PA++++

11

Best for Daily Use

Ultra Sheer Moisturizer

  • Light enough for every day

SkinMedica’s moisturizer goes on sheer and melts into the skin like butter. Formulated with vitamin C and E to nourish the skin throughout the day.

12

Best for Sun Protection

UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

Sunscreen and moisturizer in one, this iteration from Elta MD glides onto the skin clear, doesn’t feel greasy, and works well under makeup.

13

Best for Hydration

Epionce Renewal Lite Facial Lotion

Dr. Rebecca Kazin recommends the Epionce Renewal Lite Facial Lotion for its hydrating formula. “I recommend this to my patients for its ability to hydrate the skin without occluding your pores. The formula provides ultra light-weight hydration for oilier skin types,” she says.

14

Best Skin-Loving Ingredients

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream Hydrating Moisturizer (1.6 oz.)

Don’t be stingy with this cloud-soft creamy mixture of hyaluronic acid and elderberry extracts that come together to provide a boost of hydration for up to 72 hours (!).

What makes skin oily?

A lot of factors contribute to your oily skin, from over-cleansing to the products you use daily. But overall, “the reason for oily skin is simply due to excess sebum production,” says Dr. Rebecca Kazin, MD, director of clinical research at Icon Dermatology & Aesthetics and creator & medical director for HairSanity. “Visually, if your skin looks shiny by the end of the day, particularly your nose and chin, you have oily skin,” Dr. Kazin adds.

What ingredients should those with oily-prone skin look for in a moisturizer?

It’s important to look at the label when shopping for moisturizers, as anything that isn’t “oil-free” can make things worse. “When shopping for a moisturizer, look for labels that say for oily skin or non-comedogenic.

What ingredients should those with oily skin stay away from?

The heavier the formula, the heavier it can feel on the skin. Dr. Kazin advises to use products with a gel or lotion-like formula instead of a cream. “Stay away from heavy cream-type formulas that include a high concentration of ingredients such as oils and shea butter,” she explains.

I recommend Epionce Renewal Lite Facial Lotion to my patients for its ability to hydrate the skin without occluding your pores. The formula provides ultra light-weight hydration for oilier skin types.

Zazie Beetz on Atlanta Season 3, Working with Donald Glover, Climate Change

Zazie Beetz and I have a lot in common. We both graduated from the same high school as Timothée Chalamet and Nicki Minaj (LaGuardia High School of the Arts in New York City). We are both Black female artists with German sides of our families. And we both want to be on the right side of history when it comes to climate justice. (“For the Earth, we have to sacrifice a couple of conveniences so we can live in more harmony,” she says.)

But unlike me, the Emmy nominee is turning traditional television on its head as Vanessa “Van” Keifer, former teacher and baby mama to Earn (played by Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino) in FX’s Atlanta. The show’s season 3 finale airs tonight, but throughout the past few episodes, Van has navigated mental health struggles, career pitfalls, and relationship drama all at the same time.

Beetz recently sat down with ELLE.com via Zoom to remind us—with her natural, unapologetic air—to have faith in our future and trust that things will work out in the end. She also shared what it’s like to work on a revolutionary show such as Atlanta, how her perception of Hollywood fame has changed, and her fascination with motherhood along the way too.

The genre of Atlanta can’t really be pinned down. Blending comedy, drama, and even horror, the show is commonly referred to as “surreal.” What was it like being a part of this genre-bending show and how did you tap into the story?

This show has continued to grow and expand and challenge its own genre and tone. Going into it, I was really just focused on [my character] Van and her arc and was not trying to adhere to any tone. It was interesting to see and watch how it was all pieced together in the end. And see how much of a curated piece it became.

I know Donald has been calling season 3 “The Maximalist Season,” which I agree with. Especially with the things that are still to come in the following episodes. Leaning into that has been really fun. I loved playing with Van this season especially because she is in a different place and is exploring new parts of herself.

How was co-starring and collaborating with Donald Glover? Has it informed the way you approach the entertainment industry?

Donald [Glover] maneuvers within the music, film, and TV industries with very little apology. He presents who he is in such a full way and isn’t afraid to go for it. I was talking with him and he was telling me about the various businesses he’s trying to open and work on. It’s cool to see someone whose mind is so expanded in a way that mine isn’t all the time. His is more in a place of leaning in and betting on yourself. Donald does a good job of really maximizing everything. His health, his family, his work. I admire that. I also want to believe that all of the interests I have can be indulged and that I can think beyond what I even imagined for myself.

Some conversations in Atlanta seemed unscripted. Were there any scenes from this season that were fully improvised?

The best pieces have improvisation. It’s sprinkled through the whole thing. All the plot points are scripted, but Donald and the writers aren’t particularly precious about the words, which I really love. Something can look good on a page but then you say it out loud for the first time and it doesn’t work, so you have to figure things out on the fly.

We certainly improvise to smooth out text or to make it feel right or drop in punch lines or transitions you can sort of trail off. It gives you more freedom and allows you to really feel the scenes and see what is actually coming up and allow that to come out.

Beetz and Donald Glover share a moment as Van and Earn in Atlanta season 3.

Oliver Upton/FX

Your dad is German and your mom is African-American. My mom is half African American and half Swedish-American. I also have a fully German grandfather. How has being biracial influenced you as an actress?

When you’re biracial you’re often painted as half-half, but I feel whole-whole. My entire life is through this perspective, and all of our individual identities impact every aspect of our lives. So it’s interesting hearing talk about being partly this and partly that because I just feel like a full mix.

I am a Black woman. That’s how I traverse the world. That’s how I look and how people see me. I may not look German, but when my dad and I spend time together, 90 percent of our conversation is in German. Besides him, his entire family doesn’t speak any English at all. So when I spend time with them, which is not infrequent, there is all German culture.

As an actress, I am really drawn to stories about navigating two cultural identities from any background. There is a universal experience of juggling two identities that anyone from mixed descent experiences. So I can bond about that with people from any background who have a half-this-half-that experience.

You’re an alumni of NYC’s LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts, where I graduated from as well! What experiences from the “FAME” school still stick with you today?

Community! LaGuardia connects you with a young group of people who are just interested in art. But these are the next generation of creators. As you graduate and you start doing things and maybe you do things for free with each other, a community is formed. And that ends up being the foundation and the building blocks of what you end up doing later on.

There are some opportunities that were the very first stepping stones into my career that had I not had this high school community, they may not have happened. And because we invested in each other in time and relationship and trust, we now can build even more.

So I learned to invest in the people directly around you. Not feeling the need to punch up but to be with the people in your community. Those are the people that are going to grow with you at the same time. It’s so interesting to me to see people 10 years later doing this really cool thing and it’s like oh, ten years ago, we were just broke doing this thing for free! That’s a cool transformation to see.

What advice would you give to your high school self?

Take more chances. There are a lot of things I wish I would have tried out more earnestly. I wish I had inoculated myself earlier to know that it’s okay to fail. It’s ok to try something and not be good. I think I was often safe because I was worried about failing. I still carry that with me to this day. I can still get buckled up by fear. But now I feel like the stakes are higher. In high school, you might feel like the stakes are really high, but they’re not. In 20 years, maybe I will look back at myself now and still think I should have just gone for it. But you don’t just grow out of fear. You have to embrace it and move through it.

“I think I was often safe because I was worried about failing. I still carry that with me to this day.”

Did you have an ah-hah moment that made you think, “Wow! I can really do this. I can be an actress and be successful”?

I never had an ah-hah moment; I just had faith in my future. My whole life, for whatever reason, I just always thought things were going to work out. I never doubted that whatever path I chose; it would somehow just work out.

I studied French in college and purposely didn’t choose a conservatory program because I have a lot of other interests I wanted to engage in. When I graduated from college, I had been acting for so long just for fun, never for money. I performed in my community throughout school. So by the time I graduated I just thought, wow I really love this, why not give it a try?

I felt like wherever this lands, it lands. And if it doesn’t head in a direction I’m super thrilled with, life is long and I’m going to do something else. I went into it loosely and without a very specific expectation. My ultimate goal was simply just to pay my bills by only acting. And I actually reached my goal! So everything I accomplish now is just for fun.

LaKeith Stanfield as Darius, Zazie Beetz as Van, Donald Glover as Earn Marks, and Brian Tyree Henry as Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles in Atlanta.

You said previously that if you weren’t an actress, you’d be a midwife. What drew you to that and how do you think we can better support women to fully thrive?

Since I was very young I had a strong calling of wanting to be a mother. I always felt and knew that was right for me and something I wanted to do. Birth is one of the very few things we have in our life that is very common but is this massive undertaking.

We truly brush death’s shoulder as we introduce life into the world. There is something spiritually profound about that. You touch the universe. You give birth to something that is untouched. When I look at newborn babies, they have this mystery in them. There is this connection to—I’m not religious so I don’t want to say God—but a connection to nature and mysticism that we all feel in our bodies. It’s such a pure essence.

I love women and I love what the female body can do. I advocate for the freedom of choice and want to protect women’s health and women’s rights. I know someone who is an abortion doula, and it’s fascinating to choose to support someone through that transition. Midwifery is something I am very passionate about and could talk about for hours.

You have done a lot of work raising awareness about climate change too. Are you hopeful that we will succeed in building a more sustainable future or are we cutting it too close to apocalypse?

I do think there is hope. Ultimately because our planet and nature have been through so much. We have gone through massive shifts and mass extinctions. Nature as an entity will carry on, whether it’s with or without us.

I would rather be a part of the story of transformation. There is a lot of innovation happening. The coming generation, Gen Z, is a lot more aware and a lot more in tune with the need to modify behavior that the previous generations just weren’t.

That’s the beauty of humanity, we’re innovative, and we are smart. That’s our thing, we are smart. So we can figure it out.

Sometimes the mistake is thinking technology is going to fix our issues when I really do believe it will be a shift in behavior and we will have to sacrifice a bit. But you know, if you hold something dear to you, you will sacrifice for anything you love. For the Earth, we have to sacrifice a couple of conveniences so we can live in more harmony.

What would you like to see in the future of film and television?

I would like to see things that embrace our true humanity, which is messy, complicated, and isn’t logical. The industry is undergoing a massive shift in general right now. Real Hollywood stars are less of a thing than they were before because the term “fame” has shifted and accessibility has shifted.

Twenty, thirty years ago, mystery is what kept the Hollywood secret alive. Now, what people are able to share on their own terms, that mystery is being unveiled, which is good, but it changes how we interact with celebrities of our time.

Because of social media, more different kinds of people can tell stories. You see more diversity of storytelling because people can just publish something online and people can watch it. But overall I’m less focused on the future and more on what I am doing now.

What projects are you most looking forward to working on?

Me and my partner David are writing and developing stuff. It’s really empowering to write the stories you really want to be in. You always get scripts that every now and then, something will hit all of the points that are important to you. But most of the time that’s not always the case. It’s amazing to be able to do that yourself. To give birth to something and raise it through development. I’m really excited for these stories.

Here’s How Naomi Campbell Is Glowing Through The Pandemic

David M. BenettGetty Images

I’ve loved Naomi Campbell since the ’90s. Her sculpted face and silky straight hair are imprinted in my mind when I think about my introduction to fashion. As a child her influence on me knew no bounds, whether it was her ‘Got Milk?’ ad that made me solely drink 1% or her strong runway walk that I would try to emulate years later at the beginning of my modeling career. She’s one of the original supermodels—a true icon—so much so that today, she’s simply known by her first name: Naomi. Her impact on the fashion industry is limitless. Amongst all the supers, Campbell is the most booked and busy, strutting down runways, posing on multiple covers, and most recently, becoming the new face of Pat McGrath Labs as the brand makes a foray into skincare.

The latter is what led to our Friday afternoon Zoom conversation. She appeared on screen with her PR entourage mute and off-camera, but noticeably there as they surround our two images. Nevertheless, it felt like we are the only two in the room. “Hi Danielle, how are you doing?” she asked with her (literal) million-dollar smile. I sat back with ease and returned the smile. We immediately began talking like old friends, about skincare, the pandemic, and amidst all the craziness in this world, where she feels most comfortable.

Naomi’s skin is goals, whether you are 51 or 21. She’s been using Pat McGrath Labs Essence 001 in Rose for a year now and it just accentuates her natural glow. And while I was expecting her to run down a list of expensive products that only supermodels or the super-rich could access, her routine had less to do with what she puts on her skin and more what she puts in her body. “I don’t do coffee and I’ve never really been into coffee,” she said. As a one cup a day and a cappuccino at brunch on the weekends type of woman…my heart sank. If you want her skin but can’t face rough mornings without your daily caffeine, she emphasized the importance of staying hydrated. In addition to drinking water, Naomi revealed, “Every few months I do a cleanse where I drink a certain juice for that period of time.” And even supermodels aren’t absolved of the effects of aging and our metabolism. “I can’t eat like I used to,” she admitted. “I’m more pescatarian than anything now. I try to be careful of what I put in my body.”

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

And that’s understandable. No matter the age, many of us have become more health-conscious and cleanliness-focused for added protection against COVID-19. In 2019, before the pandemic, Campbell went viral for an epic pre-flight cleaning routine that involved her vigorously scrubbing with Dettol wipes and wearing a mask during the majority of her flights because people cough and sneeze on the plane. And while many laughed then or considered it extra, little did we know that months later, it would become the norm. Now she’s expanded her routine. “I added,” she said—and not just solely for the plane. She’s created her own concoction for elevators “because you go in these elevators and often a lot of them don’t have an air filter!” Campbell rattled off the recipe with the precision of someone who has clearly made this multiple times: “chlorophyll, vinegar, and iodized salt, and I boil it and put in a spray bottle,” revealed Campbell. Even if people reassure her that the elevator or space has been cleaned, she sprays. “I’ve got to do what makes me feel comfortable in this time we’re in and so nothing has changed. I’m not taking off my mask. I don’t feel comfortable to take it off yet. I still feel like we need to be cautious and careful and diligent,” Campbell said.

So during a time when there is so much disarray, where does Campbell feel most at home? “For me, the continent of Africa feeds my soul,” she revealed. “The whole continent. The light, the people, the energy. I love it. It feeds my soul. It’s buzzing with creativity; there is a different essence in each place. They all offer healing and calming.” It’s no surprise, as Campbell has created an oasis via a villa in Malindi, Kenya. She admits how much she loves traveling; however, don’t expect to see her frequenting traditional tourist locations. “India, Saudia Arabia, Egypt…all these emerging markets and places that have been open to us that were never opened before are the places that I love,” Campbell said.

When our time came to an end, Campbell graciously thanked me for the interview and told me to be well. I immediately hung up and navigated to Amazon to add chlorophyll, vinegar, and iodized salt to my cart. While the world is currently unpredictable, one thing I do know is I’ll be surviving the pandemic just like Naomi Campbell—with hydrated skin and a homemade remedy (sans a luxurious villa in Kenya…for now).

He began the exclusive series with the Boke, Tiger Tail, and Denim Boke capsules, which were heralded as a reflection of the bold KENZO spirit tinted with Nigo’s own signature graphic designs. A field of poppies spreads across the limited-edition capsule, a gender neutral set of simple silhouettes. With Poppy, Nigo recalls the philosophy of his predecessor Kenzo Takada, who drew most of his inspiration from nature. The final stage in the cycle lapses Takada’s vision into what Nigo plans for the future of KENZO.

Everything About Lizzo’s New Boyfriend

Lizzo has finally confirmed that she has a boyfriend, who remains nameless for now. On April 18, she was interviewed by Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM show Radio Andy. Cohen asked her about paparazzi photos of the musical artist out with a man in West Hollywood, having dinner at Craig’s restaurant.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

When he wanted to know if she was still with the mystery fella, Lizzo said, “Yeah, whatever yeah.”

So, what do we know about Lizzo’s boyfriend?

Where has Lizzo’s new boyfriend been seen?

In addition to that Valentine’s Day meal, they were seen at Crustacean Beverly Hills in October 2021 and again up on a balcony in Malibu in March 2022. She said in her interview that he was at Saturday Night Live on April 16 when she hosted and performed as the musical guest as well.

What has Lizzo said about dating in the past?

The pop icon jokes a lot about dating various stars on social media, and even poked fun of herself during that Saturday Night Live episode’s opening monologue.

“They think I’m collecting members of One Direction like Infinity Stones,” she said. “I even heard a rumor that I’m pregnant with Chris Evans’ baby. I have no idea where that one started.”

She added, “It could be the TikTok I did where I said, ‘I’m pregnant with Chris Evans’ baby, y’all.’ It’s called manifesting.”

To Cohen, who suggested being famous made it hard to date, Lizzo said that her success is “not even a factor” in her relationship.

“If you have the right person, no, not at all,” she shared. “It should be mutually supportive no matter what that person does.”

In 2019, she told People that she was very independent.

“I’m a single-minded individual, and I really like my freedom. I think there’s a lot of people that need to be in relationships and need to be in love. I want it sometimes, but I don’t need it.”

What other relationships has Lizzo been in?

Lizzo told Rolling Stone that one relationship inspired “practically every song” on the album Cuz I Love You. But it ended in a bit of heartbreak, and she said she needed her freedom.

“As f-cked up as it sounds, I needed that heartbreak experience,” she said. “I’m not sad, because I use the pain so constructively. It’s inevitable. The pain is human experience.”

It sounds like her upcoming album might be a bit influenced by her new relationship as well. In February, Lizzo told Variety that she was “a little bit” in love and that had made it into her work.

“It is a love album,” she shared. “I’m shocked.”

A Finale That Falls Into Its Own Trap

Spoilers ahead for Anatomy of a Scandal.

We knew what we were in for when, at the end of Anatomy of a Scandal’s first episode, James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend) is accused of rape.

I’m not talking about the accusation itself; audiences knew that was coming if they’d paid any attention to the Netflix show’s source material, Sarah Vaughan’s book of the same name. Instead, I’m pointing to what happens immediately after the allegation is relayed to James: An invisible assailant leaps into the scene and punches him in the stomach, hard enough that he sails upward, then backward through the air. The screen cuts to black before we see his landing, but it’s implied that he falls quite unceremoniously on his ass, though no one around him seems to notice or care. Up until this moment, the tone of Anatomy of a Scandalthe new series from Melissa James Gibson and Big Little Lies’s David E. Kelley—has been dark and understated, a predictable choice given the subject matter. But this moment of inexplicable buoyancy, this profound bit of surrealism, encapsulates how Anatomy of a Scandal will repeatedly undermine its own point throughout the rest of the series.

In fact, we can skip directly to the finale to best illustrate the problem. By the time we reach the last episode, we’ve learned that barrister Kate Woodcroft (the excellent Michelle Dockery) is Holly Berry, former friend and Oxford study partner of Sophie Whitehouse (Sienna Miller), James’s devoted wife. Holly Berry has changed her ridiculous name not out of embarrassment but out of attempted reinvention: You see, James Whitehouse is accused of rape not only by his co-worker Olivia Lytton (Naomi Scott), but also by a student he met at Oxford decades ago. That student was Holly Berry, and she is now attempting to prosecute him for his crimes under the guise of a different face and name.

Never mind that this is a wildly improbable turn of events and a conflict of interest that would derail any and all of Kate’s attempts at justice. The biggest issue is that, despite huge efforts by its talented cast, the show’s ending can’t seem to remember its purpose.

The episode opens with Sophie slipping into Kate’s office, where she confronts her former friend with the disarming line, “You look familiar. Have we met before?” In reality, Dockery’s Kate looks absolutely nothing like Nancy Farino’s version of Young Holly, to the point that some serious facial reconstruction would have been needed to pull off any resemblance. But we’ll overlook that detail.

Kate denies that she knows anyone by the name of Holly Berry, or that she and Sophie might share a mutual friend. Unsatisfied, Sophie leaves, but Kate panics, dashing over to her friend Ali’s home in the pouring rain, where she releases a torrent of anxieties: “What happens if they’ve found me out and I’ve tried my last case? Because that would fucking kill me.” If that’s true, why would Kate endanger her career in the first place? Why is she convinced she’s the only one who can adequately prosecute James Whitehouse?

Netflix

Sophie goes home, takes a deep pull from a bottle of wine to signal her distress, and curls up on the couch to ruminate over a quarter-eaten anniversary cake. But James finds her there, at 1:30 in the morning, and decides this is the proper time to unload his secrets. “Holly Berry,” he starts. “What did she look like?”

Thus begins a conversation in which James reveals he might have raped Holly Berry years ago, but really it’s all so unbelievable, and, sure, Holly seemed “shaken” after they had sex, but it was only because she’d been a virgin! “It was…spontaneous,” he tells Sophie, who looks at him like he’s revealed something both disturbing and incomprehensible, like that he moonlights as the Tooth Fairy. “It was certainly 100 percent not rape.” The logical acrobatics are astounding, though Friend pulls them off with tact; through his delivery, we can almost gather how a man in James’s position might misunderstand things so completely.

But then James plops the cherry on top of the truth sundae: Turns out, when their fellow Oxford classmate Alec jumped (or rather fell) to his death the night of the Libertine end-of-term party, it was future Prime Minister Tom Southern who supplied the heroin that inadvertently led to Alec’s death. And it was James, Tom’s longtime best mate, who “disposed of the evidence” shortly before raping Holly. “I’ve told you everything now,” James tells Sophie, who retains a remarkable cool in the face of such damning evidence.

The next day is the trial; the gist is this: Kate implores the jury that “one of them is lying,” either Olivia Lytton or James Whitehouse. She repeatedly reminds the jury that they are “here to determine the truth,” yet offers virtually no reason as to why they should think James is lying, other than that he’s a man in a position of power. That might be enough to prosecute someone in the court of public opinion, but a jury needs evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, and though it exists, Kate doesn’t care to mention it. She doesn’t bring up Olivia’s bruised breast or torn underwear, both of which were photographed and documented. Instead, she chooses to repeat phrases that are entirely hearsay: That Olivia told James “not here,” and that he called her a “prick-tease.” Kate then appeals to, presumably, the jury’s morality by urging that “James Whitehouse’s privilege does not extend to rape.” This is an absolutely true statement, and an important theme of the entire series—except that it is completely undone by the paper-thin closing argument that preceded it.

Angela, the defending barrister, takes Kate’s argument (the truth!!!) and crumples it in her fist. She outlines what is agreed upon between Olivia and James: that spontaneous sex was a common theme in the couple’s affair, that it was often aggressive, and that neither Olivia nor James could confirm Olivia had told him “no,” only that she’d possibly said “not here.” Then Angela finishes her slam dunk. “Why would James Whitehouse force himself upon Olivia Lytton, a woman who still loved him, a woman who was willing to resume the relationship?” she asks. We, the audience, know why: because James Whitehouse is a presumptuous man who assumes what women want from him without bothering to ask. But the jury sees only what Angela insists, that “an affair is not a crime.” And so it becomes immediately obvious who will win the case.

Sophie returns home to her children and a cache of on-the-nose dialogue (“We’ll win because we’re Whitehouses!” “Air is crucial. You can’t survive if you can’t breathe.”) Meanwhile, the jury announce the verdict, and James Whitehouse is a free man. He smiles at Sophie, who can barely stand to meet his gaze.

Ana Cristina Blumenkron/Netflix

Later that evening, Kate watches the news coverage of the verdict and seethes, smashing her television screen with her remote. But at the Whitehouse abode, Sophie demands the truth from James. Did he call Olivia a “prick-tease,” and if so, didn’t he know that implied Olivia was unwilling? James shrugs. “Olivia loved risky situations,” he says by way of explanation. Sophie turns away, hissing, “That is not what you said in court.” He seems almost amused by this conversation, thumbing his champagne glass as he tells his wife, “I told the core truth, which is that she wanted it.”

The core truth. Anatomy of a Scandal is fascinated by “the core truth,” and yet it spends so much time dancing around it with unnecessary visual theatrics, predictable plot developments, and multiple logical fallacies that it seems, at times, to miss the core truth entirely. The core truth is that men like James Whitehouse get away with sexual assault on a regular basis, largely owing to their privilege and the public’s intense desire to satiate them. Men like James Whitehouse can convince themselves that they did not assault someone, because the idea of that someone not wanting to have sex with them is incomprehensible. In fact, it’s manipulative! It’s a “prick-tease.” But Anatomy of a Scandal gets lost in the jumble of its own argument.

As Sophie finishes putting the pieces together, she approaches Ali outside the latter’s home, where she asks if Kate Woodcroft is, in fact, Holly Berry. Ali refuses to betray her friend by answering the question directly, but she gives Sophie what she needs to know to determine that it’s true. Kate soon learns what Sophie has surmised, and in a fit of desperation, she meets with her lover and former academic mentor, to whom she reveals that a) her name is Holly, b) she just tried to prosecute someone who’d raped her, and c) they can’t continue their affair. In fact, she only started the affair because he’s “unavailable.” Watching the end of this relationship is fascinating, given its similar power dynamics to that of James and Olivia. Is Anatomy of a Scandal trying to argue this relationship is healthier, because Kate entered and ended it willingly? Or is the show implying that Kate never had a choice at all—that this affair is similarly toxic due to the deceit and hierarchy involved? The audience can’t quite be sure.

But back to the Whitehouses, who are ripping at the seams. Sophie has decided to leave James, though she admits her own shame at having let him “curate the truth” for so many years. “I don’t know who the fuck you are anymore,” she says, moments after having admitted to helping him tweak, erase and reframe the truth since they first got together as students. She knows exactly who he is, but she’s only just realized she can’t stand him. “I can’t stay,” she says. “Because if I do, who will our children become?” It might be too late for such concerns—they’re Whitehouses, and they already know they win at everything. She promises to tell her kids “the core truth,” but what does that imply? That she’ll hide the details, that she’ll sugarcoat reality, as their father did when he told “the core truth”? She’ll shuttle them away from their privileged upbringing in the hope it sheds off of them like a second skin? Again, Anatomy of a Scandal can’t bring itself to answer these questions.

Finally, Sophie and Kate meet, where they iron out the details of what really happened that night in college. Kate gets in a barb about Sophie’s privilege, to which she replies, “If I have traded on the currency that I was told was mine, well…that’s what I was raised to do.” Kate asks if Sophie will expose her to the press, but Sophie reveals she has other plans: She’s instead told the papers about Alec’s accident, as well as who supplied the heroin and who covered up the evidence. “Merry Christmas, Holly Berry,” she says sweetly, moments before both Tom Southern and James Whitehouse are taken into police custody.

As instrumental music swells, Sophie and her children run off to live a charmed life on the coast of Sussex, while Kate is newly fulfilled at work, to the point that she smirks into the camera as a new trial launches. Such is how Anatomy of a Scandal ends—with a neat ribbon, an unusual choice for a series supposedly about blurred lines, the aftershocks of trauma, and the pervasive influence of privilege.

Anatomy of a Scandal convolutes its own thesis statement, first with overcomplicated visual effects, next by tossing in an obvious plot twist, and finally by giving everyone a happily ever after—except Olivia Lytton, whom the show has all but forgotten by the time she leaves the witness stand. We never again see or hear from the survivor, the woman courageous enough to tell the truth. That single omission is more emblematic of Anatomy of a Scandal’s “core truth” than anything the series commits to camera.
