Caitlin Clark breaks Fever rookie scoring record in win over Wings
Caitlin Clark toppled another Indiana Fever record.
He set the franchise’s rookie scoring mark that had been held by Tamika Catchings.
Clark had 28 points for the Fever during Sunday’s 100-93 win over the Dallas Wings with the record-breaking basket coming with 3:13 left in the half when she put up her 595th career point with a 3-pointer.
She now has 589 this season. Former Lynx star Seimone Augustus holds the all-time WNBA mark with 744,
The Fever record was set in 2002 when Catchings scored her record-setting points in 32 games with Indiana that season.
This was just the latest in a laundry list of records Clark has broken this season since she was taken first overall in the WNBA draft this year out of Iowa.
The year Catchings set the franchise rookie record, she also won WNBA Rookie of the Year.
Clark seems to be on her way to earning that nod as well this season as she’s averaged 18.4 points per game and shot better than 40 percent from the floor.
“You know when I walked in before the game, there were just hundreds of fans lined up. What Caitlin Clark has done for the game is generational,” Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman said during the telecast. “As a baller to a baller, I just want to say thank you to you, Caitlin Clark. For just lifting our game up. You and so many great players.”
Clark’s impact has not been lost on those who have watched the massive crowds come out to arenas to see Clark and the Fever play.
Sunday’s game was taking place in Dallas and the win helped move the Fever above .500.
The trip to Dallas even brought out what appeared to be Dallas area sports talk host Tom Gribble, better known as “Scoops Callahan.”
Gribble has gone around asking prank questions to athletes in a stereotypical 1920s reporter-style way.
The joke didn’t land with Clark and a PR person quickly asked for another question.
