Bryan Kohberger May Face Death Penalty If Convicted
Kohberger was arrested in December 2022 for the murders that took place on Nov. 13, 2022, during which Gonclaves, Mogen, Chapin and Kernodle were brutally stabbed to death in their home, located just off-campus at the University of Idaho in Moscow.
Autopsies confirmed that all four deaths of the college students—who had been residing in the house with surviving students Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortensen the night of the killings—were indeed homicides, and defensive wounds indicated they had fought for their lives.
Kohberger, 30, has remained in custody since his arrest, entering a plea of not guilty in May 2023. Nearly a year later, the former Washington State University student submitted an alibi claim, with his defense arguing that his interest in stargazing placed him near the location of the students’ home on the night of the murders.
“Mr. Kohberger was out driving in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022; as he often did to hike and run and/or see the moon and stars,” the filing, obtained by E! News at the time, read. “He drove throughout the area south of Pullman, Washington, west of Moscow, Idaho including Wawawai Park.”
The first day of the upcoming trial has been set for Aug. 11, 2025.
