Breaking down trade chances for top pitchers at MLB trade deadline
Even in a stark seller’s market — there are just five all-but-certain sellers: Marlins, White Sox, Rockies, Angels and A’s — at least 13 pitchers of real impact are expected to be discussed at the trade deadline.
Here they are, the dynamic baker’s dozen of potentially available arms, in approximate order of value, determined by both contractual situation and pitching ability (with trade chances listed).
1. Tarik Skubal, Tigers, SP
The AL Cy Young favorite would seem very unlikely to be dealt since the Tigers are showing improvement and have two more years to go before free agency with their best player. But many teams will ask! Trade chances: Very Low.
2. Garrett Crochet, White Sox, SP
The outstanding reliever-turned-starter and MLB strikeout leader (150) presumably has some innings consideration since he’s up from 12 innings to more than 100 already. He’s been linked to the Dodgers, Padres, Orioles and Yankees, but one person said the Yankees “are not that into” him. Trade chances: High.
3. Mason Miller, A’s, RP
With five years of control, folks guess Oakland hangs on to the 103.7 mph thrower. Trade chances: Low.
4. Tyler Anderson, Angels, SP
He’s putting together another excellent season in the second year of reasonable $40 million, three-year contract. Trade chances: Very High.
5. Nate Eovaldi, Rangers, SP
The defending champs will likely go for it with Jacob deGrom, Tyler Mahle, Evan Carter and Josh Jung returning. Has complicated player-vesting option for 2025. Trade chances: Low.
6. Zach Eflin, Rays, SP
The Rays already have traded two pitchers, and though he has a year to go, the $18M salary is high for Tampa Bay. Trade chances: High.
7. Chris Bassitt, Blue Jays, SP
He’d be up on this list, but his $22M salary is higher than others. Trade chances: Low.
8. Pete Fairbanks, Rays, RP
Dominant closer with quirky, fun personality has year and team option for 2026 to go. Trade chances: Low
9. Tanner Scott, Marlins, RP
The rental star is sure to go somewhere. Trade chances: Very High.
10. Jack Flaherty, Tigers, SP
He seems to have regained his form, and this rental has a much greater chance to go than Skubal. Not for the Orioles. Trade chances: High.
11. Yusei Kikuchi, Blue Jays, SP
The Jays need to sell at least their rentals, with the greater question being whether they trade non-rentals Bassitt plus stars Vlad Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. Trade chances: High.
12. Max Scherzer, Rangers, SP
Would Scherzer even waive no-trade a third time? Trade chances: Very Low.
13. Carlos Estevez, Angels, RP
Under-the-radar rental closer should go somewhere. Trade chances: Very High.
