Bayern Munich issue new update on England captain after Leverkusen draw

Bayern Munich tests have shown a “positive development” on the ankle injury suffered by Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane in their 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.

England captain Kane went down and was substituted in the 86th minute of the league match at the Allianz Arena following a challenge by Leverkusen attacker Amine Adli.

“Harry Kane suffered a painful blow to his ankle,” a Bayern statement said. “Examinations by [our] medical department on Sunday showed a positive development. Kane will continue to receive intensive treatment.”

“Hopefully it’s nothing serious,” manager Vincent Kompany said after the game. “I’m not a doctor but I hope he can play against Aston Villa.”

Harry Kane schedule

Bayern visit Aston Villa in the Champions League on Wednesday (8pm BST) and Eintracht Frankfurt in the league four days later (4.30pm).

The Three Lions resume their Nations League campaign by hosting Greece on October 10 (7.45pm) and travelling to Finland three days later (4pm).

England record scorer Kane netted twice in 20 minutes as his country beat Finland 2-0 at Wembley Stadium in the competition on September 10.

The 31-year-old has started the season in spectacular fashion, producing five goals and five assists in five league appearances, as well as scoring four – including three penalties – in Bayern’s 9-2 home win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on September 17.

Kane goals

The home encounter with reigning champions Leverkusen was the first time Kane has not been involved in a goal in 2024-25 and the first time Bayern have failed to win.

Robert Andrich gave Xabi Alonso’s side a 31st-minute lead before Aleksandar Pavlovic equalised eight minutes later to keep Bayern top, two points above Leipzig and three clear of Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund.

Die Roten had 70% of possession and 18 of the 21 attempts between the teams but only managed three efforts on target.

Winger Serge Gnabry struck a post from Kane’s cross two minutes after the break, then sent the rebound against the crossbar.
