Binance to drive crypto and blockchain awareness among Indian investors

Crypto exchange Binance announced the parallel launch of three key educational initiatives to fast-track educating Indian investors and students about the cryptocurrency and blockchain ecosystem.

While recognizing the importance of investors’ awareness of crypto and blockchain, Binance highlighted that Indian regulators and policymakers cite the lack of education as an area of concern, which currently hinders the widespread adoption of crypto.

Primarily targeting the student demographic in India, one of the three educational initiatives launched by Binance involves the initiation of the ‘Blockchain for Good’ Ideathon, a platform for college students to come up with solutions for making crypto more accessible and inclusive.

Binance also partnered with India-based crypto influencers and educators, including Neha Nagar, Aditya Saini and Kashif Raza, to host a free webinar named Crypto for All on May 1. According to the official announcement, the crypto influencers will focus on teaching the basic concepts of blockchain and crypto while demystifying myths related to crypto trading:

“Along with providing certificates issued over blockchain by Binance NFT to all attendees, select winners will receive grand giveaways in Bitcoin and Binance Coin (BNB).”

Speaking to Cointelegraph about the Indian landscape, the founder of Bitinning, Kashif Raza, revealed that “The major roadblock in the current crypto education system is that there are not enough platforms providing education in a simplified manner.” He also pointed out the need for introducing educational information in various languages to cater to the vastly diverse Indian population.

Binance’s third initiative is the newly launched Learn and Earn program that allows users to earn crypto while learning about the crypto and blockchain ecosystem. Being a long-standing crypto educator in India, Raza highlighted Binance Academy’s role in keeping up-to-date with the latest educational information.

Underscoring the untapped opportunity in educating the young crowd of India, Leon Foong, Head of APAC at Binance, stated:

“We hope to create the right incentives for users to do more thorough research and make better-informe investment decisions.”

The crypto exchange has also partnered with one of India’s top tier universities, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT – D), as a title sponsor for its cultural fest Rendezvous to showcase use cases, including NFT tickets and certificates, fan tokens and Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP).

On an end note, Raza recommended fellow Indians to educate themselves about the crypto ecosystem before making investments:

“Learn first and then think of earning. Web3 > crypto and one should understand the underlying tech and also try to build a career in it.”

While counter-productive on some levels, India’s decision to levy heavy taxes on crypto investors has brought over certain clarity around the government’s stance on the budding ecosystem.

In early April, Coinbase Ventures, an investment arm of American crypto exchange Coinbase, conducted an in-person pitching event in Bangalore, India, with plans to plan to invest $1 million in various Indian cryptocurrency and Web3 initiatives.

In partnership with Buidlers Tribe, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed that the venture firm intends to tap into India’s software talent and help accelerate India’s economic and financial inclusion goals. Speaking to Cointelegraph about the impact of the new tax law in attracting foreign investments, Buidlers Tribe co-founder Pareen Lathia stated:

“Tax law is just one positive step. This is a paradigm shift, and regulations will catch up.”

Google Chrome for Android May Soon Let You Restore All Recently Closed Tabs

Google Chrome on Android can sometimes introduce issues during your smooth browsing experience by closing all tabs together at once. This may happen due to a bug, or by accident. In such cases, the user often keeps looking for ways to restore all tabs, especially if there are multiple tabs that are being in use before the abrupt closing of Chrome. To provide a permanent solution to such issues, Google Chrome for Android has been spotted experimenting a feature to lets the user restore all closed tabs at once, similar to what’s already available on Chrome for desktop.

While it is easy to restore a window by going through browser history, users often faced an issue while restoring all the closed tabs. However, there was no solution to restore multiple closed tabs on Chrome for Android. Chrome Story has recently pointed to the new experimental flag in the Chromium source code, Android Bulk Restore or Android Tab Restore, which indicates that Google has already started to test this feature on Android.

As mentioned in the Chromium Gerrit, the user will be able to restore recent tabs in bulk by enabling the restoration feature. To do so, one has to go to Recent Tabs > Recently Closed. This saves the user’s time and will not require browsing through the Chrome history and opening windows using the previous links.

The feature is likely to soon be available on the Canary version of Google Chrome for Android. However, there is no timeline set for a public rollout of this feature. The entry on Chromium Gerrit hints that it is pretty new at this time. Those who wish to test the feature can download the latest Canary version from the Google Play Store. However, since it is highly unstable, the users are advised to wait for the stable version on Android for the best experience.

The ability to restore all recently closed tabs is currently available on Chrome’s desktop version, which also comes with a pop-up window that lets you choose if you wish to restore the currently closed tabs.

While Chrome for Android lets the user manually restore each tab one by one, it is not possible yet to restore them all at once in a single click. Google has been working on the feature, where users will be able to restore recently closed tabs from the “Recently closed” section under Recent tabs.

With the addition of this new feature, users will be able to experience a smooth browsing experience, where restoring closed tabs will not be an issue anymore.

What to Stream in May

It’s been two years since “Normal People,” the series adapted from Sally Rooney’s novel of the same name, debuted on Hulu. Depending on how warped your perception of time is lately, that may feel like it was just last week. Or perhaps the experience of watching the show glimmers in your memory like a relic from another lifetime. I’m of the persuasion that it’s been just long enough that I’m ready for another Rooney adaptation, so I’ve been eagerly anticipating “Conversations With Friends,” which arrives on May 15.

If that seems far away, you can indulge any hankering for British drama this weekend with the first episode of the four-part “Masterpiece: Ridley Road,” about a Jewish hairdresser who infiltrates a neo-Nazi group in 1960s London. Or skip the drama and try Showtime’s “I Love That For You,” starring “Saturday Night Live” alums Vanessa Bayer and Molly Shannon as hosts on a home shopping network. The second season of the comedy series “Ziwe” premieres this weekend on Showtime as well.

Continuing in the comedy vein, Mike Myers plays multiple characters in the Netflix limited series “The Pentaverate,” a spinoff of his 1993 film “So I Married an Axe Murderer,” premiering Thursday (May 5, naturally). It also stars Keegan-Michael Key, Ken Jeong, Debi Mazar and Jennifer Saunders. And “Hacks” is back for Season 2 on HBO Max on May 12. (More grist for those of us marveling at the elastic nature of pandemic time: “Hacks” debuted a year ago.)

The absorbing documentary series “The Staircase,” about the writer Michael Peterson’s trial in his wife’s death, is getting the dramatization treatment on HBO Max starting Thursday. Colin Firth and Toni Collette play the couple, but I’m most interested to see Parker Posey portray the prosecutor Freda Black, who was an outsized character in the documentary. “Candy,” another true-crime tale, starring Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey, arrives on Hulu on May 9.

The real housewives of both Atlanta and Beverly Hills return in May, as do “Basketball Wives” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.” On the documentary front, Netflix has “Meltdown: Three Mile Island,” about the 1979 nuclear accident in Pennsylvania, and “Our Father,” about the children of a fertility doctor who secretly inseminated patients with his own sperm.

And for those who’d like to escape the space-time continuum — and who can blame them? — there’s “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” starting Thursday, as well as “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and the first part of the fourth season of “Stranger Things,” both on May 27.

What are you looking forward to watching this month? Drop me an email.

🍿 Movies: Five horror flicks to stream.

🎭 Theater: “POTUS” is a new Broadway satire about presidential enablers.

🖼 Art: Even the “wrong” Picasso (now in Washington, D.C.) can be right. And Basquiat and Matisse are on offer in New York.

I got my first bunch of local asparagus this week and put it to excellent use in Eric Kim’s recipe for creamy asparagus pasta, with its silky, seaweed-laced sauce. The dish features a speedy and very smart technique: You boil rigatoni in water seasoned with a sheet of dried kelp (such as Korean dasima or Japanese kombu), then add more kelp to garlic- and red onion-spiked heavy cream. Sliced asparagus and slivers of toasted seaweed (gim, nori or seaweed snacks) are folded in right at the end for freshness and crunch. I doubled the asparagus, using the whole big bunch, and there was still plenty of the savory sauce to cover it all. The subtle umami flavor of the seaweed reminded me of a good aged Parmesan — albeit with a delightful saline kick.

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, M.L.B.: It’s very early. But … the Mets are good. In the latest edition of The Athletic’s M.L.B. power rankings, the Mets were No. 2, behind only the powerhouse Dodgers. On Friday, five Mets pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter. And their starter for Sunday, Max Scherzer, hasn’t lost a regular-season game since last May. 7 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, ESPN.

Twitter-Musk Deal: Nothing That Is Said Now Matters, Says Jack Dorsey About Controversies

Amid a cloud of uncertainty following billionaire tycoon Elon Musk taking charge of Twitter, its co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey has unleashed a tweetstorm in which he shared his thoughts on the social media platform’s shortcomings, user trust and whether or not it should permanently ban users. Since Musk’s takeover deal was finalised, many Twitter employees have been anxious about how the future would unfold for them. They would have hoped Dorsey, who shares a close relationship with Musk, would clear things for them. But they are likely to be disappointed. Dorsey, however, said nothing that is said now about Twitter matters.

Musk has publicly called out some top Twitter executives for banning users who violated Twitter’s policies. And, this has filled most other employees with a degree of uncertainty. Dorsey did not directly mention those episodes but outlined some vague ideas about how Twitter could fix these issues.

“Every decision we made was ultimately my responsibility,” Dorsey said. “In the cases, we were wrong or went too far, we admitted it and worked to correct.”

Without mentioning specific issues, he said “some things” can be fixed immediately but others require re-implementing the entire system. “All of that should be done publicly,” he added.

Dorsey appeared to refer to the controversies Twitter has attracted of late, saying, “Nothing that is said now matters. What matters is how the service works and acts, and how quickly it learns and improves.” The former CEO accepted that it was his failure that he could not address issues in time.

Dorsey, however, was clear that he did not believe in a “permanent ban”, except for illegal activity, and Twitter requires a “protocol that’s resilient” to avoid such situations in the future.

Interestingly, Twitter permanently banned former US President Donald Trump last year after a pro-Trump mob laid siege to the US Capitol. The company cited a risk of further violence if Trump was allowed on the micro-blogging site. However, Trump has said he would not return to Twitter even after Musk’s takeover.

Bitcoin network difficulty breaks into a new all-time high of 29.794T

Reassuring its position as the most resilient blockchain network against attacks, the Bitcoin (BTC) network recorded a new all-time high network difficulty for the second time this month in April — jumping from its previous all-time high of 28.587 trillion to 29.794 trillion.

Greater network difficulty demands greater computational power to successfully mine a BTC block, which prevents bad actors from taking over the network and manipulating transactions, also known as double-spending.

As evidenced by data from blockchain.com, Bitcoin’s network difficulty has seen almost a year-long uptrend since August 1, 2021. Before that, between May and July 2021, was a timeline when BTC network difficulty fell nearly 45.5% from 25.046 trillion to 13.673 trillion — at the time raising momentary concerns about the network’s vulnerability.

Further cementing Bitcoin’s resilience against 51% attacks, on April 28, the Bitcoin network hash rate too recorded a new ATH of 258 EH/s. As shown below, the network hash rate eased down to the 220 EH/s mark by the end of the month with no visible negative impact on the BTC network difficulty.

The month of April also was witness to one of the lowest average transaction fees on the Bitcoin network — the cost associated with transferring BTC. For the first time in two years, on April 18, the average BTC transaction fee fell down to $1.039, which at its highest was $62.788 in April 2021

While Bitcoin miners continue to pursue the last 2 million BTC into circulation, the network is well-positioned to attain a newer all-time high with respect to overall security and price.

Related: Bitcoin hodlers targeting $100K is what’s preventing 40% price drawdown, data suggests

New research paints an optimistic picture about BTC, underscoring the strength of hodlers hoping for all-time highs.

As Cointelegraph reported, on-chain indicators suggest bullish momentum thanks to a lack of short-term holders (STHs), as noted by popular analyst “Root”:

“Since we didn’t reach prices above 100K, which so many expected, many still believe this will eventually happen and might therefore hold on to their coins.”

ED Seizes Rs. 5,551 Crore of Xiaomi India in Alleged Foreign Exchange Violation Case

Funds worth over Rs 5,551 crore of Chinese mobile manufacturing company Xiaomi India have been “seized” for violating the Indian foreign exchange law, the Enforcement Directorate said said on Saturday.

The action has been taken against Xiaomi Technology India Private Limited. The company (also called Xiaomi India) is a trader and distributor of mobile phones in the country under the brand name of Mi.

“Xiaomi India is wholly owned subsidiary of China-based Xiaomi group. This amount of Rs. 5,551.27 crore lying in the bank accounts of the company has been seized by the Enforcement Directorate,” the agency said in a statement.

The seizure of funds has been done under relevant sections of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) after a probe was launched by the federal agency against the company in connection with alleged “illegal remittances” sent abroad by the Chinese firm in February.

In a statement provided to Gadgets 360 responding to the ED move, a Xiaomi spokesperson said:

“As a brand committed to India, all our operations are firmly compliant with local laws and regulations.
We have studied the order from government authorities carefully. We believe our royalty payments and statements to the bank are all legit and truthful. These royalty payments that Xiaomi India made were for the in-licensed technologies and IPs used in our Indian version products. It is a legitimate commercial arrangement for Xiaomi India to make such royalty payments. However, we are committed to working closely with government authorities to clarify any misunderstandings.”

Xiaomi started its operations in India in 2014 and started remitting the money from the next year, it said.  “The company has remitted foreign currency equivalent to Rs. 5,551.27 crore to three foreign based entities which include one Xiaomi group entity, in the guise of royalty,” the ED said.

Such huge amounts in the name of royalties were remitted on the instructions of their Chinese “parent group” entities, it alleged.  “The amount remitted to other two US-based unrelated entities were also for the ultimate benefit of the Xiaomi group entities,” the ED said.

It said while Xiaomi India procures completely manufactured mobile sets and other products from the manufacturers in India it has not availed any service from these three foreign based entities to whom such amounts have been transferred.  “Under the cover of various unrelated documentary facade created amongst the group entities, the company remitted this amount in guise of royalty abroad which constitute violation of section 4 of the FEMA,” it said.

The said section of the civil law of FEMA talks about “holding of foreign exchange.” The ED also accused the company of providing “misleading information” to the banks while remitting the money abroad.

Earlier this month, the ED had also questioned the global vice president of the group, Manu Kumar Jain, at the agency’s regional office in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Oh, We’ll Bring These 20 Bring It On Secrets, Don’t Worry

18. Most of the routines performed by the Toros and the Clovers featured stunts that are considered illegal in high school competitions.

“There are illegal moves,” Reed confirmed in an interview with HuffPost. “There are some collegiate moves in there that are not high school moves…that would probably be disqualified. At the time, when we were making the movie, if one of these things came up, we erred on the side of what works dramatically or what worked best for us visually.” That’s alright, that’s OK with us!

19. The film’s ending was a point of contention among the filmmakers, as there was a divide when it came to which cheer squad should win Nationals. Spoiler alert: The Clovers would take home the trophy.

“I remember there was a whole debate about who was going to win, and there were people in the mix that were like, ‘Well, Kirsten’s the lead, the Toros have to win,'” Reed recalled to MTV. “Well, nah, that’s not the story…they did an amazing job. But they came in second to the other team, and it was a life lesson for her.”
