Usher’s 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show Will Have Fans Screaming “Yeah”

Usher had us fallin’ in love with his 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The “Yeah!” singer did not disappoint when he took the stage at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on Feb. 11, following the second quarter of the big game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. (See all the stars who made it out for the event here.)

After all, he performed a medley of his dance-floor-ready hits, including “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love,” “OMG” and “Love in This Club.” The R&B star—who arrived on stage decked out in all-white and accessorized with a single, Michael Jackson-inspired glove before changing into a bejeweled get-up and skated around on rollerblades—also worked in some slower jams, including aughts staples “Confession Pt. II,” “Caught Up,” “Burn,” and “U Got It Bad.”

And the song selection wasn’t the only part of Usher’s 13-minute performance that made us want to say, “Oh my god.” The Grammy winner took his “30 Years in the Making” show—which coincides with the release of his new album Coming Home—to new heights by bringing out special guests Jermaine DupriAlicia Keys to sing “If I Ain’t Got You” and “My Boo,” H.E.R. to perform an electrifying guitar solo, Will.i.am to join him on “OMG” and Lil Jon and Ludracris to close out with their iconic collab “Yeah!”

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 719 | Russia-Ukraine war News

As the war enters its 719th day, these are the main developments.

Here is the situation on Monday, February 12, 2024.

Fighting

  • Seven people were killed, including three small children, after a Russian drone attack on the northeastern city of Kharkiv on Saturday hit a petrol station burning half the street to the ground.
  • Russia launched drone attacks on Kyiv and southern Ukraine, injuring at least one civilian and damaging a gas pipeline and residential buildings in the river and seaport of Mykolaiv, Ukraine’s military said on Sunday. The Air Force said air defence systems destroyed 40 out of the 45 Russian-launched Shahed drones.
  • Ukrainian intelligence said it had evidence Russian forces were using Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink on the battlefield in occupied areas in the east of the country. Musk said the system was not being sold to Russia.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced five senior military appointments after naming Colonel General Oleksandr Syrsky as the new Armed Forces chief earlier in the week. Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi would take charge of uncrewed systems and the development of the use of drones by soldiers, while Colonel Andriy Lebedenko would focus on technological innovation of army and combat systems as deputy chiefs of staff to Syrsky, Zelenskyy said. Three brigadier generals were named deputies of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – Volodymyr Horbatyuk, who would run operations and management, Oleksiy Shevchenko, in charge of logistics, and Mykhailo Drapatyi on training.

Politics and diplomacy

  • A narrowly divided United States Senate moved closer to passing a $61bn aid package for Ukraine, despite mounting opposition from Republican hardliners and former US President Donald Trump who is running for election in November.
  • Trump told a campaign rally that if elected president, he would not protect NATO members who had not met their financial obligations and would “encourage” Russia to attack them. The White House said the comments were “appalling and unhinged”. European Council President Charles Michel said the comments were “reckless”, while NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned against talk that “undermines security”.
  • Alexander Stubb was elected Finland’s new president. The centre-right, pro-European Stubb is a strong supporter of Ukraine and has taken a tough stance towards Russia.
  • Russian state news agency TASS said the registration of candidates for the March presidential election had closed, with the final list including President Vladimir Putin and three politicians who all support Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Antiwar candidate Boris Nadezhdin was not on the list.
  • Human rights group Memorial said 71-year-old Ukrainian Viktor Demchenko had died in a Russian prison while on trial for espionage. Demchenko had been accused of spying, participation in a terrorist group and the illegal possession of weapons. TASS later reported that Demchenko died on December 31 as the result of a stroke several days earlier.

Weapons

  • In an interview with German media, NATO’s Stoltenberg called on Europe to increase its arms production to support Ukraine and prevent “potentially decades of confrontation” with Moscow.

Travis Kelce Has Heated Moment with Coach Andy Reid at Super Bowl 2024

It looks like Travis Kelce might need to calm down.

During the second quarter of Super Bowl LVIII, the Kansas City Chiefs player appeared to lose his temper with head coach Andy Reid after an on-field fumble—while he was on the sidelines. Cameras caught Kelce as he approached Reid, yelling in his face and grabbing onto his coach’s arm.

“He comes over to Andy,” commentator Jim Nantz announced over a replay of the moment, “He goes, ‘Keep me in!’ What happened is, on the fumble he was not in the game. Noah Gray went in and he had to block.”

The heated exchange occurred during the Feb. 11 face off of the Missouri-based team and the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas—one that the stars have turned up and out to see.

And the evening started on a high note with performances from Post Malone, Andra Day and Reba McEntire who sang “America the Beautiful,” “Life Every Voice” and the national anthem respectively.

Taylor Swift Arrives at Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs are making the team’s fourth Super Bowl appearance in the last five seasons. While some N.F.L. players go their entire career without playing for a championship, one of Kansas City’s newcomers had their ticket punched after only 12 games.

As Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic said on X, shortly after the Chiefs’ championship win: “Taylor Swift makes the Super Bowl in her first year in the league. Elite.”

Ms. Swift, who has been dating Travis Kelce, Kansas City’s star tight end, has changed the N.F.L. conversation all season, attracting a new audience for the league and inspiring strong emotions (both positive and negative) among fans. Her critics as well as her detractors may have some burning questions ahead of the game. First and foremost, they wondered if she would be there.

As expected, she is at the stadium and cheering on Mr. Kelce and the Chiefs.

Ms. Swift, as you may have heard, is good at keeping secrets. Her plans, beyond concert dates, are rarely announced in advance. That has led some to devise their own methods for figuring out what she’s up to. Ahead of a Kansas City game in October, for example, an NBC producer said he had a spotter plane searching the area around MetLife Stadium for police escorts in hopes of alerting the television crew if she showed up (she did).

Mr. Kelce was inundated with questions about Ms. Swift last week, and while he said he had heard some of her upcoming album — spoiler: he likes it — he did not offer any details about whether she would be at the game.

But her plane was spotted in Los Angeles on Saturday and she arrived at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday afternoon in time for the game. She walked the tunnels of the stadium wearing a black top and pants while carrying a red jacket over her shoulder — and wearing a custom diamond and gold necklace by Stephanie Gottlieb with Mr. Kelce’s No. 87 on it — and then headed up to the luxury suites.

Before the game, she was seen talking to, among others, Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the N.F.L., who last week called her a “dynamo.”

“Everything she touches, there are people following,” Mr. Goodell said at his annual news conference. “We count ourselves fortunate, and we welcome it.”

The CBS broadcast was fairly conservative in terms of how much she was shown in the first half, likely as a result of a frustrating first half for Mr. Kelce. He had only one catch in the half and argued loudly with the coaching staff, at one point bumping into Coach Andy Reid.

She sure was. Her Eras Tour resumed recently, and on Saturday night in Tokyo she performed yet another marathon set of her extensive catalog of songs. With flights from Tokyo to Las Vegas often taking 13 hours or more, and human beings requiring sleep, some worried she might not make the game.

The Japanese Embassy in Washington pointed out that timing was not a real hurdle for Ms. Swift. First of all, a private jet shortens the journey (and provides a place to sleep peacefully if needed). Second of all, the international date line was her friend.

In 1873, before the international date line officially existed, the author Jules Verne mapped out Ms. Swift’s time advantage in “Around the World in 80 Days.” In the book, the protagonist Phileas Fogg believes he has lost his bet only to realize the distance and direction of his travels had saved him:

In journeying eastward he had gone towards the sun, and the days therefore diminished for him as many times four minutes as he crossed degrees in this direction. There are three hundred and sixty degrees on the circumference of the earth; and these three hundred and sixty degrees, multiplied by four minutes, gives precisely twenty-four hours — that is, the day unconsciously gained. In other words, while Phileas Fogg, going eastward, saw the sun pass the meridian eighty times, his friends in London only saw it pass the meridian seventy-nine times. This is why they awaited him at the Reform Club on Saturday, and not Sunday, as Mr. Fogg thought.

Or, as “The West Wing” summarized more succinctly in a scene that discussed President Bartlett’s journey from Tokyo to Washington, D.C. (and that recently went viral online):

Josh: He’s gonna land in Washington an hour before he took off?
Sam: Yeah.

For older generations, those scenes helped explain the logistics of the international date line. For Gen Z and younger, their frame of reference will likely be … when Taylor Swift flew to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl.

During the regular season, Ms. Swift attended numerous games in Kansas City while seated in a luxury suite controlled by Mr. Kelce’s close friend and longtime teammate, Patrick Mahomes. She appeared to become fast friends with Mr. Mahomes’s wife, Brittany, and was regularly seen with other members of the Mahomes family.

She has also spent time at games with Mr. Kelce’s parents, Donna and Ed, and her own father, mother and brother came with her to a game on Christmas. During Ms. Swift’s trip to New Jersey for a Chiefs-Jets game she was seated with friends like the actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.

At a playoff game in Buffalo last month, she and Kylie Kelce were among those shown reacting to Jason Kelce’s shirtless bellowing and fraternizing with the crowd.

And at the A.F.C. championship game in Baltimore, she was surrounded by Mr. Kelce’s family and associates, including Donna and Ed Kelce, Jason and Kylie Kelce and Mr. Kelce’s managers, Aaron and André Eanes. There were also a few of Ms. Swift’s friends, like the actress Keleigh Teller and the model Cara Delevingne.

For the Super Bowl, it was a similar crowd, with the Kelces, the Eanes brothers and Ms. Lively there with Ms. Swift and her family. Additions to the typical crew, in terms of who she was shown with during the first half, included the rapper Ice Spice — who entered the stadium with Ms. Swift — and the singer Lana Del Rey.

No one ever seemed to mind Jack Nicholson being a fixture at Los Angeles Lakers games, or Spike Lee being more associated with the New York Knicks than most of the team’s players. Drake got only a slap on the wrist when he began walking onto the court during timeouts at Toronto Raptors playoff games. But even though Ms. Swift receives relatively little airtime during the broadcasts of Kansas City’s games, she has become a target for those who still think she’s getting outsize attention.

“The attention is there because the audience wants to see it,” Jason Kelce, brother of Travis, said in an interview during last week’s Pro Bowl festivities. “If people didn’t want to see it they wouldn’t be showing it.”

As Ms. Swift put it, “a few dads, Brads, and Chads” may be angry, but the TV networks are thrilled. A ratings analysis by The Upshot indicated that she very well may be a driving factor for the league’s increased audience. Coach Andy Reid of the Chiefs has repeatedly said that he’s happy to have her around, and the N.F.L., which is enjoying an unexpected expansion of its built-in audience, has fully embraced her association with the league.

“N.F.L. fans come in all types — even global sensations,” said Alex Riethmiller, an N.F.L. spokesman. “We’re glad to have Taylor on board.”

Ms. Swift has said she loves the number 13, and her fans can seemingly find it everywhere. In the case of this year’s Super Bowl, the examples are plentiful:

  • Super Bowl 58 (5+8=13)

  • Feb. 11, 2/11 (2+11=13)

  • Kansas City is playing the 49ers (4+9=13)

  • The 49ers were the No. 1 seed in the N.F.C., while the Chiefs were the No. 3 seed in the A.F.C. (1 and 3 — 13)

  • This is the 13th N.F.L. game Ms. Swift has attended this season

It is unclear if it is a good or bad sign that San Francisco’s starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, wears No. 13. Time will tell.

Paul Rudd and More Celebs Turning Super Bowl 2024 into a Family Night

A family that attends Super Bowl LVIII together, stays together.

After all, several stars turned football’s biggest game, which saw the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers face off into a family outing.

Among those in attendance at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium Feb. 11 was Jay-Z, who brought daughters Blue Ivy Carter, 12, and Rumi Carter, 6, along for the ride. (Beyoncé and son Saint, 6, appear to be taking a bye for the event). In fact, the “New York State of Mind” rapper, who was spotted on the field before kick-off, is becoming a regular for football’s biggest game, as he assists in running the Super Bowl Halftime Show with the NFL—and was instrumental in securing Usher‘s role as the performer.

And while the rare appearance from the Carters will have the Bey-Hive in their feels, they aren’t the only family to be cheering from the sidelines. Chiefs super-fan Paul Rudd brought along his son Jack Sullivan Rudd, 18 for the occasion—hoping for a repeat after celebrating Kansas City’s 2023 on the field. Taylor Swift cheers on boyfriend Travis Kelce at Super Bowl | Entertainment News

The 14-time Grammy-winner completed the Japan leg of her Eras Tour on Saturday before returning to the US on a private jet.

Global pop sensation Taylor Swift has made it to the Super Bowl to cheer on her boyfriend Travis Kelce after days of breathless speculation about whether she would attend the biggest event in the United States’s sporting calendar.

Swift arrived at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas more than an hour before kickoff to watch Kelce kit out for the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers.

After the game got under way, Swift, wearing a gold necklace bearing Travis Kelce’s number, 87, could be seen watching the action from a luxury suite accompanied by Blake Lively and rapper Ice Spice.

Some San Francisco 49ers fans jeered after Swift was flashed on the big screens in the stadium during the first half of the game, prompting the pop star to grab a drink and chug it down.

The 14-time Grammy winner on Saturday wrapped up the Japan leg of her Eras Tour with a sold-out show in Tokyo, before dashing back to the US on a private jet to attend the game.

Swift, who began dating Kelce last year, has attended 12 American football games to watch the Kansas City Chiefs tight end play.

Swift’s relationship with Kelce has been at the centre of a media and pop culture frenzy for months, with NFL officials crediting her presence at the games with driving a sudden surge in the popularity of the sport among young women.

“Obviously, it creates a buzz, it creates another group of young fans, particularly young women, that are interested in seeing, ‘Why is she going to this game? Why is she interested in this game?’” National Football League (NFL) Commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters earlier this week.

“Besides Travis, she’s a football fan and I think that’s great for us.”

Kelce joked earlier this week that he feels under pressure to win after Swift on Sunday picked up a record fourth Grammy for album of the year for Midnights.

“She’s rewriting the history books herself,” Kelce said at a news conference on Monday. “I told her I would have to hold up my end of the bargain and come home with some hardware, too.”

Swift’s appearance at the 58th edition Super Bowl, which regularly attracts more than 100 million viewers, could help drive the audience for the NFL showcase to new heights.

The defending champion Chiefs are taking on the San Francisco 49ers in the 58th edition of the NFL’s title game at Allegiant Stadium.

The Kansas City Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champions, and a win on Sunday would deliver their third title in five years.

The San Francisco 49ers, who were leading 10-3 at halftime, are vying for their first title since 1994 for a record-tying sixth Super Bowl win.

Rob Gronkowski Thinks Super Bowl Ticket Prices Are “Ridiculous”

For many people wanting to attend Super Bowl 2024, the ultimate decision was a hard pass solely because of the prices.

With the cost ranging from $2,000 for face-value tickets to $37,000 for last-minute tix on resale site StubHub, per CBS News, even some NFL players could find it difficult to afford to watch the Feb. 11 event in person at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Retired football icon Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski shared his thoughts on the high prices with E! News two days before the Big Game.

“It’s pretty ridiculous,” the four-time Super Bowl champion said Feb. 9 at FanDuel’s Super Bowl party, presented by Spotify. “If you’re playing in the game, you’re probably losing money, which is crazy. I think that should change. I think the NFL players need to get compensated better in the playoffs, especially going to the Super Bowl.”

Gronkowski spoke from previous experience. “I played in the game before where I brought family and friends to the game,” the 34-year-old said, “and I actually lost about $20,000 playing the Super Bowl.”

Drop Everything Now & See Taylor Swift at Super Bowl for Travis Kelce

You heard the rumors from Inez. You can’t believe a word she says (most times), but this time it was true: Taylor Swift is at the 2024 Super Bowl.

Flying back from her Eras Tour concerts in Tokyo, the singer arrived at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11 to watch boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs face off in the great war against the Francisco 49ers.

And best believe when Taylor walked in the room, she made the whole place shimmer. For the big game, the “Bejeweled” artist sported a black crochet suspend corset from Dion Lee, a pair of Area pants featuring sparkling cut-outs and her red lip, classic. She also wasn’t The (only) 1 in her suite as Blake Lively, Ice Spice, Travis’ mom Donna Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce all joined her in rooting on the Chiefs.

Of course, Taylor attending the Super Bowl isn’t exactly beyond fans’ wildest dreams. After all, she’s gone to several of Travis’ games this season—with this being what she hopes will be lucky no. 13.

And as the Chiefs strive to get another Super Bowl ring, some couldn’t help but wonder if the tight end also had paper rings on the brain.
