An Avatar: The Last Airbender Open World RPG Is in Development, but It’s Mobile Only
An official Avatar: The Last Airbender open world RPG called Avatar: Generations is on the way exclusively for mobile, with a soft launch taking place this month.
Square Enix London Mobile and Navigator games are developing the free-to-play game that will follow the stories of Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko as they travel the world, seemingly recreating the original three seasons of the Nickelodeon TV series.
Avatar: Generations will feature squad-based battles throughout different adventure sequences and promises a deep upgrade and party customisation system through the ability to recruit new heroes. DLC will also be released that expands on the Avatar universe, exploring the stories of previous and future avatars including Korra, Roku, and Kiyoshi.
Square Enix has announced Avatar: Generations, a mobile game based on the hit Nickelodeon series.
The soft launch this month will take place in Canada, Denmark, South Africa, and Sweden for both iOS and Android, with other territories expected to follow in the coming months. Patrick Naud, head of mobile at Square Enix Montréal, commented that he “can’t wait for players to dive in later this year,” but it’s unclear if he simply referred to the soft launch or if the game is expected to be fully released in 2022.
“With a globally beloved brand of this level, we’ve endeavoured to create a game that expands the rich and storied universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender in way that feels authentic and exciting to fans of the series and RPG games alike,” said Navigator Games’ CEO Will Moore.
“At the same time, we’ve ensured that the game remains accessible to anyone who doesn’t traditionally play RPGs. Our partners at Square Enix London Mobile have been hugely supportive in these efforts, and we’re working closely with our community during this soft launch period to make the best version of the game possible.”
The developers didn’t announce exactly when fans can expect more information, but with the soft launch later this month, it shouldn’t be too long before we find out more about Avatar: Generations. An official website has also been unveiled, though it currently holds little information.
A taste of the Avatar world was given recently when a firebending mod was added to Elden Ring but this will be the first official game since 2014’s Legend of Korra, but this one wasn’t received particularly well. In our 4/10 review, IGN said: “Even with a reputable developer behind it, The Legend of Korra game left us bent out of shape.”
