Four-times African champions Ghana kick off 2023 qualifying at Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

2022 has been a mixed year for the Black Stars who crashed out in the group stages of AFCON in January, failing to win a game for the first time ever.

However, back in March, Otto Addo’s team caused a big upset by qualifying for the World Cup.

They beat fierce local rivals Nigeria on away goals thanks to Thomas Partey’s long-range strike in the second leg in Abuja.

So, the Black Stars will be in Qatar later this year, drawn in a very tough group alongside Portugal, Uruguay and Korea Republic.

Before then, AFCON 2023 qualifying kicks off for them here before a trip to the Central African Republic at the weekend.

Madagascar made their Africa Cup of Nations debut back inn 2019 and, against all odds, reached the quarter-finals.

Three summers ago, Nicolas Dupuis’s side topped their group, above Nigeria, beat DR Congo on penalties before falling to Tunisia.

Despite this, the Barea failed to qualify for the 2021 edition, eliminated by Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia.

This time, with Central African Republic and Angola completing Group E, Madagascar will feel they have a decent chance.

Can Ghana end their five-match run of competitive internationals without a victory?

Angola vs Central African Republic

As mentioned, the two outsiders in Group E will meet in this one at Estádio 11 de Novembro.

Angola were a force in the last 2010s, qualifying for World Cup 2006 and reaching the AFCON quarter-finals in both 2008 and 2010, the latter as hosts.

However, the giant sable antelopes have now failed to qualify for three of the last four AFCONs, including the most recent edition.

If Pedro Gonçalves’ side are to improve that record this year, this is probably a must win.

That’s because the Central African Republic are the minnows of this group having never qualified for a major tournament to date.

The Wild Beasts have only won one of their last 13 competitive matches, a shock 1-0 victory in Nigeria last year.

So, if Angola harbour any ambitions of reaching Africa Cup of Nations 2023, this is must win in Luanda.

Libya vs Botswana

The two outsiders in Group J kick off their qualification campaigns at Benina Martyrs Stadium.

Libya were runners-up at Africa Cup of Nations 1982, on home soil, but have only qualified for two editions since then, namely 2006 and 2012.

In fact, the Mediterranean Knights have only won four of their last 22 competitive internationals, dating back to June 2017.

Thus, Botswana might fancy their chances of an away win.

The Zebras’ one and one AFCON appearance came a decade ago, going out in the group stages without a point to their name in Gabon.

So, Tunisia and Equatorial Guinea are overwhelming favourites to qualify from this group with these two the rank outsiders.
