Lakers optimistic of Christian Wood fit in wake of ongoing FA hunt, says team insider

The Los Angeles Lakers haven’t lost sight of Christian Wood as they do believe that the big man can operate well within their system.

As they continue their hunt for his service, there remains an internal belief within the Lakers that they can be able to work with Wood amid its lopsided history of play according to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times.

“The big question would be whether the Lakers’ structure – headlined by coach Darvin Ham and James – could keep Wood focused on winning while eliminating some of his bad habits and overcoming some deficiencies.

“While he’s already played for seven teams, there’s at least some internal optimism that the Lakers could make it work as stop No. 8.”

Wood remains stuck at this year’s free agency marketplace and is perhaps the best one available. He is coming off a one-year run with the Dallas Mavericks upon averaging 16.6 points, 7.3 boards, and over 51 percent shooting from the field.

Amid these solid numbers and the fact that he is a highly talented offensive big man, reports that detail his lackluster effort, attitude, and defense have completely overshadowed his value, and these may have arguably affected his desire to earn a big payday to follow up his already expired $41MM contract.

The Lakers have been a primary suitor for Wood as the franchise still has a sizeable two open roster spots to fill and a backup big to call up for Anthony Davis. But the fact that they are limited in their financial offers and an expanded role for the 27-year-old center, their case to sign him truly has significant gaps to consider.

But if Wood desires to completely restore the notorious image he built for himself, it might be worth it to take a shot and join L.A. to further strengthen their championship odds. Malik Monk’s case serves as a solid pitch as the microwave sixth man was able to redeem himself with the Lakers in the 2021-22 season and eventually secure a bonafide place within the Sacramento Kings core.

Wood also holds familiarity with Darvin Ham dating back to their time in the Milwaukee Bucks. The head coach offers solid relationship building and ways to integrate a complex talent with Russell Westbrook setting a good example from last season.

The clock is already ticking for Wood to find another home. But for now, in his position, landing in Los Angeles may seem to be the best scenario to grab.
