Mother of Jeffrey Dahmer Victim Criticizes Netflix for Depiction of Son’s Murder: “It Didn’t Happen Like That”
Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has been breaking records at Netflix – but not without garnering some major criticism. Shirley Hughes, mother of Jeffrey Dahmer victim Tony Hughes, is the latest family member of a real-life Dahmer victim to express her dissatisfaction with the Evan Peters-led docuseries.
Hughes had a brief call with The Guardian, which she ended early due to the sensitive topic. She said, “I don’t see how they can do that. I don’t see how they can use our names and put stuff out like that out there.”
The murder of the aspiring model, who was deaf and mute, was depicted in episode six of the Netflix series, called “Silenced”. He is portrayed by deaf actor Rodney Burford, best known for starring in the reality series Deaf U.
Associated Press reported in 1991 that Hughes was last seen leaving 219 Club, a gay bar in Milwaukee, with a friend. The 31-year old went home with Dahmer, who drugged him and dismembered his body. The Netflix series depicts these moments in the critically well-received episode, but Hughes’ mother told The Guardian, “It didn’t happen like that.”
Hughes is one of many individuals who have criticized the series. Rita Isbell, the sister of Dahmer victim Errol Lindsey, said, “It’s sad that they’re just making money off of this tragedy. That’s just greed.” She added that Netflix never reached out to her before the show’s release.
Kim Alsup, a production coordinator for the series, called Monster the “worst show [she’s] ever worked on” and said there were no mental health coordinators available.
