New York City inmate escapes and jumps into East River
A city Department of Correction inmate escaped from custody Tuesday morning and jumped into the East River and is now clinging to life, law-enforcement sources told The Post.
The unidentified inmate was unresponsive when he was rescued, sources said.
It’s not clear if the person escaped from Rikers Island or the Vernon C. Bain Center, the agency’s floating jail in The Bronx.
No further details were immediately available.
Deaths in DOC custody are up 40% so far this year compared to the same period in 2022, data show.
