Jason Kidd is hoping to bring some NBA nous to the Premier League after joining Everton’s ownership group.

The head coach of the Dallas Mavericks has linked up with Roundhouse Capital Holdings, an entity within the Friedkin Group, who bought a 94 per cent stake in the Merseyside club in December last year.

Kidd is a 10-time NBA All-Star having won the championship as a player with the Mavs in 2011 as well as a double gold medallist with the United States.

He returned to Dallas as coach in 2021 and took them to the NBA Finals last year where they lost to the Boston Celtics.

Struggles this season with Doncic departure

Things have been far from smooth this season, though, with Dallas missing out on the playoffs and fan fury still evident following the mid-season trade that sent star man Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kidd, 52, will hope to get away from the turmoil during the offseason and offer his wisdom to Everton, who move into their new stadium at Bramley Dock for the start of next term.

He said: “I’m honoured to be joining Everton’s ownership at such an important moment: with a new stadium on the horizon and a bright future ahead, it’s a great moment to come on board.”

Kidd is a respected leader – Watts

Everton executive chairman Marc Watts said: “On behalf of The Friedkin Group and the Everton Board of Directors, I am pleased to welcome Jason to our ownership group.

“As one of the NBA’s greatest players and now a successful coach, his knowledge and winning mentality will be an incredible resource for Everton.

“He is a respected leader and household name for many sports fans and will bring a deeper understanding of high performance as we collectively strive to build a brighter future for this storied club.”
