Bayern pick up big win but Milan fall to defeat

After Real Madrid’s victory over Manchester City headlines Tuesday’s frantic Champions League action, four more games were on the cards for Wednesday.

Belgian side Club Brugge hosted Serie A side and Europa League holders Atalanta, while Scottish champions Celtic welcomed Harry Kane and Bayern Munich to Glasgow.

Dutch giants Feyenoord faced AC Milan and Monaco took on Benfica.

And there were plenty of goals, drama and controversy to set up some tasty second legs as teams bid for a place in the last-16.

Club Brugge secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Atalanta thanks to a late penalty from Gustaf Nilsson.

The Belgian side started brightly and were rewarded in the 15th minute when Ferran Jutgla capitalised on Chemsdine Talbi’s pressing work, finishing past Rui Patricio.

Atalanta struggled early on but gradually grew into the game, finding an equaliser in the 41st minute. Mario Pasalic expertly glanced a header into the net after a pinpoint cross from Davide Zappacosta.

The second half was a cagier affair, with Atalanta creating the better chances despite not being at their fluent best.

Lazar Samardzic and Zappacosta both came close to giving the visitors the lead, but Simon Mignolet stood firm in the Club Brugge goal. The game appeared to be heading for a draw until injury time, when Nilsson went down under an aerial challenge from Isak Hien.

Despite furious protests from the Atalanta players, VAR upheld the referee’s decision, and Nilsson confidently dispatched the penalty to hand Club Brugge the advantage.

The result gives the Belgian side a narrow lead ahead of the second leg in Bergamo, where Atalanta will look to overturn the deficit.

Celtic put in a spirited performance but ultimately fell to a 2-1 defeat against Bayern Munich at Celtic Park.

The visitors dominated the first half, registering five shots to Celtic’s none, and broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time when Michael Olise fired home a stunning strike after a fortunate ricochet.

Bayern doubled their advantage early in the second half through Harry Kane, who volleyed in from a Joshua Kimmich corner in the 49th minute.

The German side looked in control and could have added to their lead, but Celtic refused to capitulate and grew into the game as it progressed.

An energetic late push from the hosts paid off when Daizen Maeda nodded in from close range in the 79th minute after Hyun-Jun Yang kept the ball alive from a corner.

Celtic continued to press, with Alistair Johnston forcing a sharp save from Manuel Neuer in stoppage time, but Bayern held on for the win.

Brendan Rodgers’ men will take encouragement from their late rally as they prepare to face Dundee United on Saturday before heading to the Allianz Arena next Tuesday for the return leg.

Feyenoord secured a vital 1-0 victory over AC Milan in the first leg at De Kuip.

Igor Paixao’s early strike proved decisive as the hosts claimed a hard-fought win against the seven-time European champions.

The Dutch side made a dream start, taking the lead inside three minutes when Paixao cut inside from the left and fired an angled shot that squirmed through Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan’s gloves.

Feyenoord nearly doubled their advantage before the break, with Paixao rattling the crossbar from distance.

Despite Milan fielding an attacking lineup featuring Rafael Leao, Christian Pulisic, and former Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, the visitors struggled to break down a disciplined home defence.

Milan’s frustrations continued in the second half, with Tijjani Reijnders coming closest when his well-struck volley sailed just over the bar.

The Rossoneri failed to create sustained pressure, recording just two shots on target throughout the match. Feyenoord, meanwhile, remained dangerous on the counter, with Ayase Ueda and Hadj-Moussa both threatening Maignan’s goal.

Late substitutions saw Milan introduce 16-year-old Francesco Camarda, but the visitors lacked the cutting edge to find an equaliser. Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther dealt comfortably with Milan’s late set-piece opportunities, ensuring the Rotterdam side took a crucial lead into the second leg at San Siro.

Benfica claimed a 1-0 away win over Monaco, securing a vital advantage ahead of the return leg in Lisbon.

A tightly contested first half ended goalless, despite both sides creating opportunities. Benfica’s Carreras went closest for the visitors, while Monaco’s Golovin tested Trubin from range.

The game exploded into life just after the restart as Benfica broke the deadlock in the 48th minute. Vangelis Pavlidis raced onto Araujo’s through ball, shrugging off Salisu’s challenge before chipping an exquisite finish over Majecki.

Monaco’s night quickly worsened when Al Musrati received a second yellow card for dissent just four minutes later, leaving the hosts to battle with 10 men.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Monaco had a golden chance to level through Zakaria, but his tame effort was easily gathered by Trubin.

As the final whistle blew, Benfica celebrated a hard-fought win, putting them in a strong position for the second leg. However, Monaco remain in the tie and will look to produce a spirited response in Lisbon, with a potential last-16 clash against Barcelona or Liverpool on the horizon.
