Manchester City were in danger of suffering a seismic FA Cup shock this afternoon after Stefan Ortega’s own goal put League One side Leyton Orient ahead at Brisbane Road.

City had already survived a couple of scares when striker Jamie Donley, on loan from Tottenham, picked up the ball in midfield and chipped a brilliant effort over Ortega from fully 45 yards in the 16th minute.

The ball hit the underside of the bar and struck the backtracking goalkeeper before crossing the line.

City felt there had been a foul by Sonny Perkins on debutant Nico Gonzalez in the build-up but referee Darren Bond waved away their protests.

It was no more than Richie Wellens’ men deserved after an enterprising start that had caused City’s much-changed backline no end of problems.

And if that wasn’t bad enough for City, Gonzalez, a £50million buy from Porto on deadline day, had to limp off with what appeared a hip injury sustained in the challenge from Perkins.
