Inside Drake Hogestyn’s final ‘Days of Our Lives’ episode before death

Drake Hogestyn concluded his time as John Black on the long-running soap opera “Days of Our Lives” in a touching way.

A rep for the show confirmed to People on Tuesday that Hogestyn, who tragically died from pancreatic cancer at age 70 on Saturday, starred in his final episode of “Days of Our Lives” on September 9.

In the episode, Hogestyn’s John shares some touching moments with his grandson, Tate (Leo Howard), who is grappling with his love interest, Holly (Ashley Puzemis), finding out who was responsible for her father’s death.

Tate tells his grandfather that he and Holly had a “pretty big fight” when he revealed that his Uncle Eric (Greg Vaughan) was responsible for her father’s death. Holly was shocked by the news despite Tate assuming she already knew.

John comforted Tate with wise words, suggesting he give Holly some “space.” When that didn’t work, he proposed Tate send Holly a message, letting her know he was thinking of her.

John assured Tate after he texted Holly, “She will [read it]. And I am sure that she’s gonna take you up on it when she is ready.”

John also spent time with his son Brady (Eric Martsolf). While that episode primarily focused on the three generations of men, Hogestyn shared his finale scenes with his leading lady, Marlena (Deidre Hall), in the September 5 episode.

Hogestyn joined “Days of Our Lives” in 1986 as the mysterious character “The Pawn” before quickly becoming a fan favorite as John Black. He starred in the hit soap for 38 years and filmed over 4,200 episodes.

John had many beloved other halves throughout the years, but he and Marlena won a Soap Opera Digest Award for Favorite Couple in 2005.
