King Charles marks second anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death with poignant Balmoral service

King Charles has marked the second anniversary of his beloved late mother Queen Elizabeth II’s death with a poignant church service at Balmoral.

The monarch, 75, arrived at Crathie Kirk — a small church on the Balmoral estate favored by the late sovereign — with his wife, Queen Camilla Sunday.

The pair attended a commemorative service to honor the king’s late mother, who died at Balmoral age 96 on Sept. 8, 2022.

The date is doubly symbolic for Charles, as it is also the second anniversary of his accession to the throne.

A small crowd of royalists gathered outside the church hoping to catch a glimpse of the king and queen upon arrival.

The couple, who tied the knot in 2005, sat in the back seat of a maroon state Bentley as they pulled up to the congregation.

For the occasion, Charles opted for a charcoat gray jacket paired with a pink flower lapel.

Camilla, for her part, wore a green jacket that featured red and green tartan lapels. She topped off her look with a green hat with feather detailing.

The service was led by Rev Kenneth MacKenzie, who ministered the late Queen Elizabeth II in her final days.

Guest preacher at the service, the Rt Rev Dr Shaw Paterson, described the anniversary as “particularly significant and poignant for the royal family.”

After the service, he described how Charles was “very well known and liked” in the local community around Balmoral and is “very much part of it” — much like Her Late Majesty.

“It was a privilege to preach to the congregation of Crathie Kirk, which included King Charles III and members of the royal family,” he said at the service.

“This weekend is particularly significant and poignant for the royal family, indeed for all of us in Scotland, across the wider UK and Commonwealth, because the 8th of September marks the second anniversary of the death of Her Majesty the Queen and His Majesty’s accession to the throne.”

Tributes were paid to the late monarch on Sunday, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer honoring the “70 glorious years of her reign.”

The royal family’s official X account also posted a tribute, sharing a photo of the late queen at a summer Buckingham Palace garden party in 2019.

“Remembering Queen Elizabeth II, 1926-2022″,” the post read.

The king has faced a challenging second year as monarch following news of his cancer diagnosis back in February, followed by the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis the following month.

After taking a break from royal duties to focus on his treatment, Charles returned to public-facing duties in April.
