Arsenal boss Arteta reveals admiration for Chelsea outcast Sterling

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he has “really strong feelings” about exiled Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling.

Sterling has been told he can leave Stamford Bridge as he does not fit into the plans of new Blues boss Enzo Maresca.

The former England international has worked with Arteta previously during their time at Manchester City and the Spaniard remains a huge fan.

He said: “My time with Raheem was exceptional. We built a really strong relationship together. He was unbelievable at that time. He taught me a lot as well, about individuals, how they think, how we support them. He is someone I have really strong feelings about.”

Arteta – there could be transfer surprises

Although Arteta stopped short of saying Sterling was a target, he did admit the next week could bring some surprise transfer activity prior to the window closing.

“Anything can happen, both ways, and you have to be ready,” he added. “Especially in the last week, you have to be alert and prepared because a lot of surprises can come for many different reasons. We are prepared.”

One player expected through the door at the Emirates is Mikel Merino with widespread reports suggesting the Spain international is close to completing a £33million move from Real Sociedad.

Arteta was tight-lipped, however, when asked about the player, saying: “You know I cannot talk about any player that is not with us.

“There is still time in the market, both ways, for all the managers, for all the teams here, and you can tell how busy it’s getting.”

Arteta looking at the academy

Arsenal have been relatively quiet in the window so far with their only major deal – in addition to confirming the permanent signing of goalkeeper David Raya – being the acquisition of Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori.

“We knew what we wanted to do and what we could do, which is important. You have to put those things together,” said Arteta.

“And then, what is available that can really strengthen the squad for the short, medium and long-term?

“The other important thing is looking at our academy. We have some promising talent and we have to create space for those kids to come close to the first team.”

Arsenal opened their Premier League campaign with a routine 2-0 win over Wolves last weekend and face a sterner challenge tomorrow evening when they visit Aston Villa, a side that did the double over them last season.

Arteta said: ”They are a really good side, really well coached [by Unai Emery]. They dominate every aspect of the game. When you give them space to run they are phenomenal and when they have to find space they are able to do that. Set pieces as well. That’s why they did what they did last season.”
