Porro goal puts Spurs ahead in Premier League

Pedro Porro glanced in Tottenham’s first goal of the 2024-25 Premier League season to put Spurs ahead at newly-promoted Leicester City in the final game of the first round of fixtures.

The opener was a combination between two players who might have felt hard done by to have been left out of their squads’ Uefa Euro 2024 squads in June, England’s James Maddison supplying an inswinging cross for Spain defender Porro to score in the 29th minute.

The ball came off Porro’s shoulder and was deserved for Spurs, who started brightly against last season’s Championship winners.

New £65 million signing Dominic Solanke failed to capitalise on two presentable chances, while Rodrigo Bentancur saw an effort brilliantly cleared off the line by Wilfred Ndidi.

Leicester vs Tottenham: Vardy goal

Tottenham looked in control until Leicester legend Jamie Vardy drew his side level with their first attempt on target 13 minutes after the break.

Vardy capitalised on being left unmarked to head in Abdul Fatawu’s cross from close range and score Leicester’s first goal since their return to the top flight at the first time of asking last season.

The equaliser was also Leicester’s first competitive goal of Steve Cooper’s reign as manager after the former Nottingham Forest boss succeeded Enzo Maresca during the summer.

Vardy: Age ‘just a number’

Former England forward Vardy threatened to fire City in front shortly afterwards but was denied by Guglielmo Vicario’s fine save.

The 37-year-old has won the Premier League, FA Cup and two second-tier titles since joining City in 2012, scoring 191 goals in 465 appearances, including 20 in 37 games in all competitions last season.

“I’ve always said that age is just a number,” the club captain said when he agreed a new one-year contract in the summer.

“My legs feel fine so that’s why I carry on until my legs say ‘that’s it, game over’. There will be a day when that comes, but that’s not right now.”
