‘Twisters’ Comes to Digital, But When Will ‘Twisters’ Be Streaming on Peacock?

Twisters is blowing onto premium video-on-demand tomorrow, about one month after the big-budget sequel opened in theaters.

Directed by Minari‘s Lee Issaac Chung, Twisters is a stand-alone sequel to the popular 1996 disaster flick, Twister. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as a woman-in-STEM who gave up her dream of storm-chasing after a traumatic tornado disaster. Thanks to an old pal, played by Anthony Ramos, she’s convinced to come out of tornado retirement. But then she meets an arrogant social media influencer and tornado chaser played by Glen Powell. Sparks (and possibly cows) fly.

Twisters was a big-budget box office hit. So far, the movie has earned over $310 million at the worldwide box office, more than earning back its estimated $200 million production budget. So is it surprising that Universal is releasing Twisters on digital platforms after less than one full month in theaters?

Not really. In fact, most Universal titles have been pushed “premium” video-on-demand after just over two weeks in theaters. The fact that Twisters nearly got a whole month is a sign that the studio recognizes it as a hit. That said, if you’re not willing to pay the premium VOD price for Glen Powell, you should know that we expect Twisters to stream on Peacock, the Universal-owned streamer, in the near future. Here’s what you should know about how to watch Twisters online, and when to expect to see Twisters streaming on Peacock.

Twisters digital release date:

Beginning on Tuesday, August 13 at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (which is also 9 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, August 12), Twisters will be available to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime, the film costs $24.99 to buy a digital copy. The film will also still be playing in theaters.

The Twisters digital release date was revealed by the Amazon Prime landing page for the movie, which says that the movie’s digital release date is August 12, 2024 at 9 p.m. Pacific Time.

How to rent Twisters online:

Twisters will be available to rent on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more, beginning on August 13. The movie will cost $19.99 to rent, and you’ll have 48 hours to watch the movie after hitting “play.”

Will Twisters be streaming on Peacock or Max?

Twisters‘ streaming release date on Peacock has not yet been announced, but it’s likely Twisters will stream on Peacock in the not-too-distant future, because it is a Universal movie, and Peacock is the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal. All the new Universal theatrical movies end up streaming on Peacock, though the wait period has varied by title.

Another Universal release, The Bikeriders, was pushed to VOD after just over two weeks in theaters, and it began streaming on Peacock on August 9—about a month-and-a-half after opening in theaters, and about one month after releasing on digital. That was a little faster than the usual Peacock release of Universal titles, possibly because NBCUniversal wants to further promote its streaming service, Peacock, during the 2024 Summer Olympics. If Twisters follows a similar release pattern, you can expect Twisters to stream on Peacock around late September 2024.

That said, it’s also possible that Twisters will stream on Max. Twisters was a joint release between Universal and Warner Bros., so it’s possible that the movie will go to the Warner Bros.-owned streaming service, Max. The 1996 Twister movie, which was released by Warner Bros. in the U.S., is currently streaming on Max. The Warner Bros. titles tend to stream on Max around a month to a month-and-a-half after releasing on digital. In the case of Twisters, that means you might see Twisters streaming on Max around late September or early October 2024.

That said, because the home release is being handled by Universal, we think it’s likely that you will see Twisters on stream Peacock, as opposed to on Max.

This is all speculation, of course. If you want to watch the 2024 Twisters movie at home right away, you can do so by buying or renting the film on digital beginning tomorrow.
