Special ed teacher who allegedly groomed student gets the boot

An allegedly pervy special-ed teacher was booted from a Connecticut classroom after The Post revealed he had been investigated by the New York City school system for inappropriate behavior with a student.

Daniel Schiels began working for Stamford, Conn. public schools in August 2021, the same month New York City’s Special Commissioner of Investigation substantiated allegations of him grooming a female student over three years while he taught at a Manhattan school, beginning when she was just 15.

Schiels sent sexually suggestive Instagram messages to the girl while she attended The Maxine Green High School for Imaginative Inquiry, authorities said. He asked her “how big her boobs were now” and “Do you have piercings?” according to SCI, which probes wrongdoing within the city Department of Education.

The Post report in May highlighted the systemic problem in which the record of public school teachers under investigation in New York City does not follow them to other school systems, or cities and states where they take teaching jobs.

When Stamford officials learned of the allegations from the report in The Post, “Schiels was immediately placed on administrative leave,” Christopher Soules, chief compliance officer at the district, said in an email to a parent.

Schiels, who didn’t respond to a request for comment, resigned from Stamford schools in June, officials told parents.

Parents at one school where Schiels worked were outraged they were not informed about the allegations.

“We are extremely, extremely uspet about it,” said a mother of a special needs student who was in Schiels’ class in Stamford.

Schiels was still licensed with the Stamford School District, according to the Connecticut State Department of Education, as of Wednesday. His LinkedIn profile says he’s “open to work.”
